Present Tenses
Present Simple
 Affirmative: They prefer smaller specialty brands.
 Negative: They don’t prefer smaller specialty brands.
 Interrogative(Questions): Do they prefer smaller specialty
brands?
 Answers: Yes, they do. No, they don’t.
I prefer smaller specialty brands.

Present Simple Tense Rules

 We use “Do” in interrogative sentences, “do” in


affirmative answers.
 Weuse “don’t” in negative sentences, and, negative
answers.
 Do, do, don’t are auxiliaries used with I, you, we, they
 Do, do, don’t are used with any verb except To Be

 Affirmative:My mother celebrates the summer festival.

 Negative: She doesn’t celebrate the summer festival.

 Interrogative (Questions): Does she celebrate the summer festival?

 Answers: Yes, she does. No, she doesn’t.

Verb Rules

 Add “s” to most verbs. Example: Dance-dances, play- plays, visit- visits.
 If the verb ends in “o” add “es”. Example: go- goes “Mary goes shopping.”
Do-does “Kathya does her homework.”
 If the verb ends in a consonant + -y, take away the –y and add “–ies”. Example:
study-studies “Roberto studies English every afternoon.”
Cry-cries fly-flies
 If the verbs end in ch, sh, x, s, add “es” Example: wash-washes, fix-fixes “He
washes his car.” “The mechanic fixes the machine.”
Present Continuous Tense
 Affirmative: Sofia is eating a hamburger.
 Negative: Sofia is not eating a hamburger.
 Interrogative (questions): Is Sofia eating a hamburger?
 Answers: Yes, she is. No, she isn’t.
 Grammar Structure
 Subject + verb to be + main verb –ing+ complement.
 I am, He, she, it is,
 We, You, They are
Simple Past Tense
 Affirmative:She studied English yesterday.
 Negative: She didn’t study English yesterday.
 Interrogative: Did she study English yesterday?
 Answers: Yes, she did. No, she didn’t
 Interrogative: When did you get your first cell phone?
I got it in the 90s.
What did you get in the 90s?
 Answers: I got the first cell phone.
