Point of Today:

1. Review Reaction Types

2. Review Balancing Equations
3. Learn how to Predict the Products
1. Combination: two or more simple compounds combine to form a
single compound. A + B AB.

2. Decomposition: a complex molecule breaks down to make simpler

compounds. AB  A + B

3. Single displacement: one element trades places with another

element in a compound. A + BC  AC + B

4. Double displacement: anions and cations of two different

molecules switch places, forming two entirely different compounds.
AB + CD ---> AD + CB

5. Combustion: oxygen combines with a hydro-carbon to form water

and carbon dioxide.
C?H? + O2  CO2 + H2O + HEAT
Diatomic Elements:
Seven (7) elements that naturally form X2
rather than existing alone. All are gases.
H2 = Hydrogen
N2 = Nitrogen
O2 = Oxygen
F2 = Fluorine
Cl2 = Chlorine
Br2 = Bromine
I = Iodine
In a chemical equation, if a diatomic atom is not
connected to another compound, it will exist in a pair
(example = Cl will exist as Cl2)
