Hyperloop is a new mode of fastest
transportation proposed by Elon Musk and a
team of  engineer from Tesla Motors and the
Space Exploration Technologies Corporation in
August 2013. It is alternative to high speed trains
which is solar powered, consisting of low
pressure tube with capsule that is transported at
both low and high speeds. It is driven by
induction motor and compressor. It can reach
upto speed of 800 miles per hour (1200 km/hr). It
is more cheaper than high speed bullet train and
safer than the airplane journey.

HYPERLOOP
INTRODUCTION
https://hyperloop-one.com/our-story

• The first idea of hyperloop had a concept of high

speed train in vacuums or evacuated tubes. In the
year 1812 the idea was invented by a British
mechanical engineer “George Medhurus” such
that man can travel through a low pressure tube.
• Musk first mentioned that he was thinking about a
concept for a "fifth mode of transport", calling it
the Hyperloop, in July 2012 at a PandoDaily event
in Santa Monica, California. This hypothetical
high-speed mode of transportation would have
the following characteristics: immunity to
HISTORICAL
weather, collision free, faster than the speed of a BACKGROUND
plane, low power consumption, and energy
storage for 24-hour operations.
•  The name Hyperloop was chosen because it would
go in a loop.

Among these all companies, we will see
in detail about the company called
HYPERLOOP
“Virgin Hyperloop One”, which is actively
working through the world to bring this
concept to reality.

WHAT IS HYPERLOOP ONE ?

It is a privately-held company out to create fast, effortless journeys that

expand possibilities and eliminate the barriers of distance and time. The
construction of this transport consists of a pod where passenger sits
which travels at airline speed though pressurized tubes using electric
propulsion and magnetic levitation. It promises to slash journey times
between major cities from several hours to a matter of minutes.

HOW DOES IT WORK ?
Virgin Hyperloop One’s technology combines two basic
principles :

https://hyperloop-one.com/our-ggiphy.com

• First is magnetic levitation (or MagLev), a technology already used in

monorails to lift the passenger pods and move them along their rails.
Magnetic levitation uses two sets of magnets; one to repel the train
from the track and lift the other to move the floating train along the
track at considerable speed with reduced friction.

page 8
• The second principle is the use of a low pressure vacuum
sealed environment for the passengers pods to travel
through. By removing most of the air from the tubes and
having no contact with the ground, the pods will face little
to no resistance as they move. The air pressure inside the
tube are equivalent to flying 20,000 feet above sea level.
Such environment enables the pods to reach speeds of
over 760 mph using very little energy.

Why choose Hyperloop ?
• Hyperloop could significantly reduce the travel time between cities.

• Due to less travel time, it could be possible to live in a completely different city or

part of the country from where you work.

• This opens up a wide range of housing opportunities with people no longer

restricted to living close to where they work and also it could take pressure off our

cities.

• A hyperloop system requires very less energy to propel pods through its tubes.

• The system could be powered by renewable technologies such as solar and wind.

page 10
Challenges faced for the development of Hyperloop ?
• It is facing global challenge to find the routes best placed to benefit from hyperloop technology.

• A small compromise in the structure of the tube would result in a catastrophic implosion. If the tube

became punctured, external air would tear into the tube, shredding it apart as it violently rushes in

to fill the void.

• Trains speeding through the tunnel would experience massive g-forces that would stress the pipes

and the passengers on board. The expansion loops would also be prone to structural deterioration,

making them a weak point along the track.

•  The Hyperloop would also be stupendously expensive.
