1 The place where you investigate

1.1 The location:

The research was conducted at Faculty Foreign Language (FFL) of
Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City (IUH).

3
1 The place where you investigate

1.2 The reason:

IUH is more convenient and effective place to collect data and

1 complete the research easily.

FFL has a large number of English major students from many

2 different regions, they have specialized in English skills and
English learning experience for many years.

the researcher wants to investigate the real effect of English self-

3 study through the web page to help FFL students improve their
English skills

Research methodology and research methods

2.1 Research methodology:

A) The methodology:

The researcher conducted a

qualitative method as the main
method with an online semi-
structured interview.

5
2
Research methodology and research methods

2.1 Research methodology:

B) Definition of qualitative methodology:

Hutton (1990) defined “Qualitative research was designed

to explore, in detail, attitudes, and perceptions of
individuals through discussions or individual interviews,
rather than by using structured questionnaires”.

Flick (2014) claimed that “Qualitative research was

interested in analyzing subjective meaning, or practices by
collecting non-standardized data and analyzing texts and
images rather than number and statistics”.
6
2 Research methodology and research methods

2.1 Research methodology:

C) The reason

Qualitative research also creates openness by

encouraging people to expand their feedback to open
up new subject areas.

Qualitative methods help researchers collect more detailed

The reason information and take an in-depth look at analyzing rankings
and numbers by recording attitudes, emotions, and behaviors

The data collected by the qualitative research method

is highly reliable thanks to obtaining detailed
information.

2 Research methodology and research methods

2.2 Research methods:

A) The methodology:
The researcher conducted an online semi-structured interview as a research tool to
collect data.

8
2 Research methodology and research methods

2.2 Research methods:

B) Definition of the semi-structured interview:

The semi-structured interview is designed to identify subjective

responses from people involved in a particular situation or
phenomenon they have experienced (Merton & Kendall, 1946)

It used a relatively detailed guide or interview schedule and could

be used when the interviewee has enough objective knowledge of
experience or phenomenon, but subjective knowledge was lacking
(Morse & Field, 1995)
