This document discusses painting work on metal surfaces. It outlines the main components of paint as pigment and organic binders. It describes the functions and characteristics of good metal paint, including preventing corrosion, protecting from atmospheric effects, and giving an attractive appearance. It also lists some common types of paints used on metals, such as aluminum paint, anticorrosive paint, and asbestos paint. Finally, it provides steps for painting metal, which involves cleaning, treating with phosphoric acid, applying primer and finish coats.

071BCE86 Paint is the liquid material applied on timber , metal and masonry surface in order to protect or decorate them. It’s composed of two main components . Pigment Organic binders Functions of good metal paint • It prevents corrosion of metals. • It protects the surface from harmful effects of atmospheric action . • It gives decorative and attractive appearance to the surface . • It renders surface hygienically safe and clean . Characteristics of ideal metal paint • The paint should be cheap . • It should have good covering ( spreading ) power . • It should be harmless to the users. • The painted surface should dry neither too slowly nor too rapidly. • It should not crack on drying . • It should be good fire and moisture resistant . Types of paints used in metal Aluminum paint : • it is visible in darkness because of it’s silver shining colour • It has high electrical resistance . • Capacity of painting is very high ( 1 liter 200sq. M ) Anticorrosive paint
• Used mainly to protect the surface of metallic structural.
• Consists of red lead , zinc oxide ,iron oxide ,zinc dost. Asbestos paint
• Used for stopping leakage of metal roofs .
• Painting gutters • Used for damp proof coat Bronze paint • Prepared by disbursing aluminum bronze or copper bronze in nitro-cellulose lacquer . • They produce very reflective type of surface . • Used in radiators • Painting on metal
• The surface is clean off rust by scrapping or
brushing with Steel wire brushes , oil , grease , etc , is removed by washing the surface with petrol , benzene or lime water • The clean surface is treated with a film of phosphoric acid. This protects the surface from rusting and provide better adhesive surface for the paint . • The prime coat or first coat is applied with brush . • After the under – coat is dried , the final coat of the desired type of paint is applied. • The finishing coat should give uniform and pleasing surface .
