Friction In Daily Life

What Is Friction?
•Resistance to motion of one object moving
relative to another.

•It is a result of the electromagnetic

attraction between charged particles in two
touching surfaces.
What Is Friction?
DISCOVERY OF FRICTION:
• GUILLAUME AMONTONS
REDISCOVERED THE TWO BASIC
LAWS OF FRICTION THAT HAD BEEN
DISCOVERED BY LEONARDO DA
VINCI IN 1493. LATER THESE LAWS
WERE KNOWN AS AMONTON’S
THREE “ LAWS OF DRY FRICTION”!
Types Of Friction

Static Friction Kinetic Friction

A force that keeps an object at rest. A force that acts between objects in motion.
Others:

Sliding Friction Fluid Friction

Resistance created by two things A force that resists motion within the
sliding over. fluid or of another medium moving
through fluid.
Formula and coefficient
• Formula for friction: f = µR
• Coefficient: Force is independent on the contact
area and doesn’t depend on how fast two objects
are moving.
• Formula for coefficient: µ=fn
• Friction always acts in opposite direction of
intended motion.
Causes of friction:
• Molecular adhesion.
• Surface roughness.
• Deformations.
• Interlocking of irregularities in
surface of two objects.
• Bumping force matching that of the
body.
COMPARISON:

Advantages Disadvantages
• 1.Helps us to walk on ground • 1.Produces heat in parts of machines
• 2.Helps in stopping a vehicle that leads to energy waste.
• 3.Generate heat when hands are • 2.Opposes motion
rubbed • 3.Responsible for wear and tear in
• 4.We can write on paper due to bike gears.
friction.
Application in daily lives:
• 1. Allows matches to ignite when rubbed.
• 2.We hold onto objects without dropping them by
friction.
• 3.Stops car or bike through the use of brake.
• 4.As we walk , there is friction between the feet
and the floor.
Examples in daily lives:
EFFECTS:

• 1.Produces heat energy

• 2.Opposes motion.
• 3.Causes wear and tear in bike gear, shoe
soles, machinery parts.
• 4.Slows down moving object, like vehicles.
• 5.Enables us to walk without slipping.
EXAMPLE OF EFFECTS
Comparing static and sliding friction:
Factors influencing friction:
• 1.Depends partly on smoothness of surface as it usually
increases between two extremely smooth surfaces
because of increased attractive electrostatic forces
between their atoms.
• 2. Increase in weight of the body causes an increases in the
amount of resistance offered to the relative motion of the
surfaces in contact.
• 3.Doesn’t depend on the amount of surface area in contact
between moving surface but depends on magnitudes of
forces holding the surfaces together.
FUN FACTS :
Friction can generate static electricity. Fluid
friction is used a lot in water parks so we can
slide smoothly and fast down the giant slides!
Wiping any two objects together is an
example of friction!
It can be also something that is rubbing in an
impact , such as hammer that strikes a nail!
SLIDING FRICTION:

-Makes sliding fun!!!

• DID YOU KNOW?

IN DEEP SPACES ,TINY PARTICLES OF MATTER MAY

INTERACT CAUSING FRICTION ,AND ALSO ON OTHER
PLANETS, BUT A SLIGHT ACCELERATION IS NEEDED!!
