Question : Kerosine at 20˚C (S.G = 0.806) flow through the pump in

Figure below at 2.3 . Head Losses between 1 and 2 is 8 ft. The
pump delivers 8 horsepower to flow. What should be the
reading h of mercury manometer?
   Q1 = V1 x A1
V1 = Q1/A1
=
= 46.86 ft/s.

Since Q1 = Q2,
A1 V1 = A2 V2
V2 = = 12.215 ft/s.

Specific weight of kerosene = 51
Specific weight of mercury = 847

P2 – P1 = ( - ) h -
= (847 - 51) h – 51x 5
= 796 h – 255 ________(1)
8 horsepower = 4401.8 ft-lbf/s
P=Q
= 4401.8 / (51x2.3) =37.53 ft

By Applying Steady State Energy Equation

+
= (+

= 3023.28
796 h – 255 (sub in eq(1))
3023.28 = 796 h – 255
h = 3.48 ft.
