The First Three Men by Rubina Nato
Long, long time ago, there were no people in Nueva
Vizcaya. There were only wide green fields, thick forest,
various fauna and flora; and the god Kabunian. He said,
“Nueva Vizcaya is such a paradise. But who will take care
of it? I will make people.”
Later that day, Kabunian accumulated tons of clay. He
worked for a long time. When he was done forming a
man, it was already late at night. The color of the night
turned out to be the color of the man. “He is too dark,”
Kabunian said.
The following day, Kabunian woke up before sunrise.
He got some clay and formed a man. When the sun
beams came out, Kabunian saw the man. “He is too
white,” Kabunian said.
With that, Kabunian got more clay, molded it and
formed another man. It was midday. The scorching sun
made the man brown. “I like this brown man,” said
Kabunian.
Kabunian sent the men to different parts of Nueva
Vizcaya. That is why there are black people and white
people. That is why some are brown
