WHAT IS BUILDING SCIENCE?

►Building science is refers to the physical behavior

of buildings and their impact on energy efficiency,  comfort,
health, safety, durability  and so on.
►It is the application of the principles of physics to the built
environment.
►An understanding of building science is vital if
the design of buildings is to be optimized and the performance
of buildings maximized.

WHAT IS NET ZERO ENERGY BUILDING?

A zero-energy building (ZE), also known as a zero net

energy (ZNE) building, net-zero energy building (NZEB), net
zero building is a building that generate equal or more energy
than they consume annually

Annual Energy Generation ≥ Annual Energy Consumption

WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING?

►Green Building is the idea of designing or retrofits a building

so that it is environmentally friendly and have least impact on
environment, produce less waste, energy efficient, water
efficient, resources efficient and healthier inside for all
occupants.

WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING?

►A green building is a high-performance property that

considers and reduces its impact on the environment and
human health.
►A green building is designed to use less energy and water
and to reduce the life-cycle environmental impacts of the
materials used.
►This is achieved through better sitting, design, material
selection, construction, operation, maintenance, removal, and
possible reuse

►72 percent of electricity consumption
►38 percent of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
►14 percent of potable water consumption
►30 percent of waste output
►40 percent of raw materials used

However , globally leading well know rating systems are
►BREEAM-UK
►LEED-USA
►CASBEE-JAPAN
►GREEN STAR-AUSTRALIA
►GREEN GLOBES-CANADA
►BCA GREEN MARK-SINGAPORE
►GREEN BUILDING INDEX (GBI)-MALAYSIA
►GRIHA -INDIA

BREEAM

►BREEAM is seen as the first green building rating

assessment in the world, launched and operated by BRE
(Building Research Establishment) in the UK
►It was introduced to the market in 1990 and was first revised
to assess offices in 1993
►BREEAM is widely used owing to its flexibility. It not only
assesses local codes and conditions but also allows 43
application in international buildings

BREEAM

►It is widely accepted that almost all later major green rating
systems 40 such as LEED, Green Star, and CASBEE are
under the influence of BREEAM

22
CASBEE

►Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment

Efficiency (CASBEE) is a method for evaluating and rating the
environmental performance of buildings and the built
environment.
►CASBEE was developed by a research committee
established in 2001 through the collaboration of academia,
industry and national and local governments, which
established the Japan Sustainable Building Consortium
(JSBC) under the auspice of the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure, Transport and DoTourism (MLIT).

Green Globes is a green building rating system based on the

BREEAM rating system in United Kingdom. It is imported to
Canada in 1996.

GREEN MARK

►The BCA Green Mark Scheme was launched in January

2005 as an initiative to drive Singapore's construction industry
towards more environment-friendly buildings.
► It is intended to promote sustainability in the built
environment and raise environmental awareness among
developers, designers and builders when they start project
conceptualization and design, as well as during construction.

GREEN BUILDING INDEX (GBI)

►The Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysia’s industry

recognized green rating tool for buildings.
►GBI was launched in 2009.It is fundamentally derived from
certain existing green rating tools, including Green Mark
(Singapore), Green Star System (Australia).
►However, It had been extensively modified to cope with
Malaysian tropical weather, environmental context, cultural
and social needs.

►LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental

Design. It is a green building certification program.
►LEED is a voluntary standard developed by USGBC (US
Green Building Council) .
►It was first launched in 1998 with a pilot version (LEED
1.0) .
►Although it was released after BREEAM, it is considered as
the most widely adopted rating scheme based on the number
of countries
►The latest version is V4.1 that has been

CREDIT CATEGORIES

►Each rating system is made up of a combination of credit

categories.
►Within each of the credit categories, there are specific
prerequisites projects must satisfy and a variety of credits
projects can pursue to earn points.
