5.2 DAMPING AND RESONANCE

5.2.1 Describe damping and resonance for an oscillating/ vibrating

system

5.2.2 Justify the effects of resonance in our daily life.

What is Damping ?
An oscillating system
that is displaced and
then left to oscillate
without the action if
external force, will
oscillate at natural
frequency.

What happen to the

amplitude of the
oscillating
system……
What is Damping ?
The reduction in an amplitude in an oscillating
system due to loss of energy.

Energy loss due to:

The effect of damping can be overcome by applying periodic external force on

the oscillating system.

The system is said to be forced oscillation.

What is Resonance ?

DEFINITION : Resonance is a
phenomenon when the oscillating system is
driven at its natural frequency by a periodic
force which produce maximum amplitude.
How does resonance occur in the two
pendulum of equal length?
 When pendulum X oscillates, all the other pendulums are forced to
oscillate.
 Pendulum C and pendulum X are of the same length.
 Frequency C = Frequency X
 pendulum X causes pendulum C to oscillate at its natural frequency.
 Therefore, pendulum C oscillates with the largest amplitude
