Given the periodic table, calculate for elements, isotopes, ions and/or
compounds: atomic masses, molecular masses, moles, number of
electrons/protons/neutrons, electronic configuration, oxidation state
and molarity (in solution).

Chemistry Language
matter - anything that has mass and takes up space.

atoms – building bocks of matter. Smallest particle of an

element

element – substance made up of atoms of one kind. Cannot

be decomposed into simpler substances
molecule – A molecule is formed when two or more atoms
join together chemically (bond).

compound – A molecule that is formed when two or more

atoms (of different elements) join together chemically. These
atoms are chemically combined in a fixed proportion.
Chemistry Language
Pure substances - have a definite chemical composition
and properties. They cannot be separated into simpler
substances by physical means They do not vary from sample to sample. E.g. compound
or element

Mixture - contains 2 or more pure substances, which

can be separated by physical means

A physical change (i.e. changes of state) in a substance

does not change the composition of the substance.
In a chemical change where there is a chemical reaction, a
new substance is formed and energy is either given off or
absorbed (combustion, corrosion….).
Chemistry Language
Physical change (i.e. changes of state) in a substance does
not change the composition of the substance (melting, freezing,
vaporization, condensation, sublimation). Other examples
crushing a can, melting an ice cube, and breaking a bottle.

In a chemical change where there is a chemical reaction, a

new substance is formed and energy is either given off or
absorbed (combustion, corrosion, cooking)
Combustion

Types of Properties

Physical Properties Can be observed without

changing a substance into another substance.
Boiling point, density, mass, volume, etc.

Chemical Properties
Can only be observed when a substance is changed
into another substance.
Flammability, corrosiveness, reactivity with acid, etc.
Chemical Reaction

In the course of a chemical reaction, the reacting

substances are converted to new substances.
Types of Properties
Intensive Properties…
Are independent of the amount of the substance
that is present.
Density, boiling point, color, etc.

Extensive Properties…
Depend upon the amount of the substance present.
Mass, volume, energy, etc.
