What are natural resources?

 Definition: They are things that are provided by
earth, they range from metals through to different
gases and their uses vary as well.
 Uses in table 5.1 p.110 (Natural resources and their
uses)
 Categories:
 Renewable
 non-renewable
 Sustainable

Cont. What are natural resources?

Renewable resources Non-renewable resources
Definition Resources can be used again Have limited supply and will
and again and won’t run out eventually run out

Examples Wind, sunlight, water, trees, Fossil fuel

fish Metals

advantages -It doesn’t run out -Efficient amount of energy

-Eco friendly production
-Doesn't cause health issues to -cost effective
human -easy to use
-Low cost of operations and
maintenance
5

Cont. What are natural resources?

Renewable resources Non-renewable resources
Disadvantages -Cost a lot to install -limited supply, it can’t be
- Intermittency replaced in human lifetime
(many of the resources aren’t -Harmful to the environment
available 24/7, year-round)  -harmful to human causing
-need for storage technology health issues
because of intermittency -contributes to global
which is expensive warming and climate change
-limited to sites due to increase of greenhouse
gases.

 Greenhouse Effect video for Kids | The Greenhouse Effect

https://youtu.be/DYHAZaasdxI
 Greenhouse gases: Carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor, ozone,
nitrous oxides, and fluorinated gases.
 Greenhouse gases importance:
 They let sunlight pass through the atmosphere,
 But they prevent the heat that the sunlight brings from leaving the atmosphere.
 Overall, greenhouse gases are a good thing.
 Without them, our planet would be too cold, and life as we know it would not
exist.
 Problem: greenhouse gases are increasing in the atmosphere because of
human activity (such as burning fossil fuel increasing CO2 in the
atmosphere) contributing to global warming and climate change

Non-renewable resources
Fossil fuel Nuclear
Origin of -fossil fuel is the remains of Producing energy through the
resource living organisms formed splitting of atoms, which
millions of years ago. releases heat energy that can
-Producing energy by burning generate steam and then be used
fossil fuel. to turn a turbine to produce
-They come in different formats electricity. (fission)
such as coal, oil and natural gas.
Benefits of using - variety of applications, -large power-generating capacity
it as an energy from electricity production to -low operating costs to produce
resource transport fuel. energy once a plant is set
- fossil fuels are necessary for
the production of a variety of
common products, such as
paints, detergents, polymers
(including plastics), cosmetics
and some medicines.
12

Cont. Non-renewable resources

Fossil fuel Nuclear

Problems using it - Limited supply : they can run - Radioactive waste
as an energy out. - High cost to set the nuclear
resource - Pollution. reactors power plants
Challenges using Global warming and climate Accidents cause environmental
it as an energy change because of green house and health issues (radioactivity
resource effect (CO2 emission increases) lasts for thousands of years)

Cont. What are the differences between

renewable, non-renewable and sustainable
resources?
Renewable resources
 They are resources that can be quickly replaced such as
wind, water and the power of the sun.
 It doesn’t run out and it doesn’t pollute.
 Resources are:

1. Hydroelectric power
2. Solar power
3. Winds power
4. Geothermal power

Cont. What are the differences between

renewable, non-renewable and sustainable
resources?
Renewable energy
 It is important to note that the terms ‘renewable energy’,
‘green energy’ and ‘clean energy’ are not interchangeable in
all cases;
 for example, a ‘clean’ coal plant is simply a coal plant with
emissions reduction technology.
 The coal plant itself is still not a ‘renewable energy’ source.
 ‘Green energy’ is a subset of renewable energy, which
boasts low or zero emissions and low environmental
impacts to systems such as land and water[1].
23

Comparison between the above

renewable power
Hydroelectric Solar Geothermal Wind power
power power power
Zero greenhouse After building: Zero Methane and other zero
gases emission after Methane (why?) gases
operating And CO2 while
building the dam
Efficiency in Most efficient As long Most efficient As long these
producing there is is wind
electricity sunlight blowing
(Intermittency)
Cost Expensive to Expensive Expensive to Cheap to
install to install install install and
Cheap to operate Cheap to Cheap to operate operate
