• Modern bread is an iconic brand of bread in India.

• It was launched in 1965 .
• It has bread manufacturing units in 13 cities spread across India.
• Edappally units is the largest unit.
• Modern foods have over 40% bread market India.
• The company was wholly owned by Central Government , and it
was taken over by Hindustan Unilever Ltd in January 2000.

• Mainly bread is manufactured in the unit,the other products are
outsourced to another agency.
• System Concerns
Bombay, Kolkata , Chennai, Bangalore , Hydrabad and Kochi.

• The raw materials are coming from Tamil Nadu,Karnataka &

• The production capacity of the unit is 100000 bread per day.

Location? Why that location?

• The company is located at Edappaly, Kochi.
• This land was given as lease to the Central Government for 99 years.
• The location has been choosen with an aim if providing employment
opportunities to the local public .
 Material handling equipments

• Conveyer ( capacity 1 kg-50 kg )

• Trolley –two types
For moving flour and sugar sacks(capacity 50 kg-100kg)
For collecting bread (capacity-25 loafs of bread)
• Crane
To automatically load flour sacks into the sieving machine.
 Plant Layout

• The company was not ready to disclose the plant layout.But from
our observation the following are the list of machines.

• Jewellery Policy:
Employees are not allowed to wear any type of jewellery like earrings ,bangles,chains etc
• Circuit Breaker :
If there is any malfunction anywhere in the company ,the current supply will be cut and the
whole production process will be stopped.
• Covering for equipment
• Fire alarm:
Fire alarms are used in the case of danger. When it rings the employees should run through
the emergency door and should gather in their allotted location.
