Learning Task No. 4
Unit 3: Intellectual Revolutions and Society

 Ancient Chinese scientists and engineers made significant scientific innovations, findings
and technological advances across various scientific disciplines including the natural
sciences, engineering, medicine, military technology, mathematics, geology and
astronomy.

 The Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) and Song dynasty (AD 960–1279) in particular were
periods of great innovation. The engineering accomplishments of early China were
matches, dry docks, the double-action piston pump, cast iron, the iron plough, the horse
collar, the multi-tube seed drill, the wheelbarrow, the suspension bridge, the parachute,
natural gas as fuel, the raised-relief map, the propeller, the sluice gate, and the pound lock.

believed that the cosmos revolve in middle kingdom of china.

 In addition to gunpowder, the Chinese also developed improved delivery systems for the
Byzantine weapon of Greek fire, Meng Huo You and Pen Huo Qi first used in China c.
900.
Key Figures of Revolution
How did the revolution advance modern science and scientific
thinking at the time?
 The Chinese economy has undergone radical transformation in recent years and is now laying the groundwork for
impressive advances in science and technology. China is setting itself up to be a major player in the fight against disease,
and there are many reasons to believe that the country will play a central role in the life-sciences research of the future.
 The 4 great inventions from ancient China - the compass, gunpowder, paper, and wood block printing. These inventions all
originated in China, and not only did they advance the world's technology, but they also greatly influenced global culture
and continue to impact our world even today. The compass revolutionized navigation, gunpowder changed weaponry
forever, while paper and printing completely transformed how we preserved our histories and knowledge for future
generations. The Four Great Inventions contributed to the economic development in East Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
 Science and technology in China has generated new knowledge, such as discoveries of new principles, and has dramatically
contributed to the development and progress of people’s lives, the economy, and the society
 China has made rapid advances in areas such as education, infrastructure, high-tech manufacturing, academic publishing,
patents, and commercial applications and is now in some areas and by some measures a world leader. China is now
increasingly targeting indigenous innovation and aims to reform remaining weaknesses.
