DEFINITION OF PROCEDURE TEXT
There are three definition about procedure text:
1) Text that explain how something works or how to use instruction / operation manuals, e.g.
How to use the video, the computer, the tape recoreder, the photocopier, etc.
2) Text that instruct how to do a particular activity, e.g. Recipes, rules for games, science
experiments, road safety rules
3) Text that deal with human behavior, e.g. How to live happily, how to succeed
PURPOSE OF PROCEDURE TEXT
There are two purpose of the procedure text:
1) To explain / tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something throught a sequence of
action or steps
2) To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something
GENERIC STRUCTURE OF PROCEDURE TEXT
There are three structure of procedure text:
• Goal/Aim
This text contains about purpose of making or operating of something
• Material/Equipment
Material consist of ingredients that are used in making something. But not all parts of
procedure text includes materials, sometimes a procedure text doesn’t have materials section
• Steps/Method
Contains the steps or sequences that must be done so that the objectives outlined in the
aim/goal to be archived. Steps or sequences must be a sequence from the first to the last
LANGUANGE FEATURE OF PROCEDURE TEXT
There are five feature of procedure text:
1) Use adverbial of sequence / using temporal conjuction (e.g. : first, second, third, the last)
2) Use command / imperative sentece (e.g. : put the noodles on the plate)
3) Using adverbials (adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example,
for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
4) Using action verbs (e.g. make, take, cook, cut, boil ,etc.)
5) Using simple present tense
EXAMPLE OF PROCEDURE TEXT
HOW TO MAKE EGG AND LEMON SOUP
Materials :
3 pints chicken stock
Juice of 2 lemons
3 oz rice
Salt and pepper
4 eggs, well beaten
EXAMPLE OF PROCEDURE TEXT
Steps :
1) Put stocks into a pan and heat until boilling
2) Add rice and cook on low heat for fifteen minutes
3) Mix together egg and lemon juice
4) Add three tablespoons of stock to the mixture and stir
5) Stir this mixture into the remaining stock in pan
6) Add a little of salt and pepper
7) Cook gently for three minutes
