1. Definition of Procedure Text
The Definition Of Procedure Text is a text that is designed to describe how
something is achieved through a sequence of actions or steps. It explains how people
perform different processes in a sequence of steps.This text uses simple present tense,
often imperative sentences. It also uses the temporal conjunction such as first, second,
then, next, finally, etc.
Other definition:
A procedure is a specified series of actions or operations which have to be executed in the
same manner in order to always obtain the same result under the same circumstances (for
example, emergency procedures). Less precisely speaking, this word can indicate
a sequence of tasks, steps, decisions, calculations and processes, that when undertaken in the
sequence laid down produces the described result, product or outcome. A procedure usually
induces a change. It is in the scientific method.
2. Purpose of Procedure Text
The purpose of procedure text is to tell the reader how to do or make something. The
information is presented in a logical sequence of events which is broken up into small
sequenced steps. These texts are usually written in the present tense. The most common
example of a procedural text is a recipe.
3. Social Function of Procedure Text
a. To describe how something achieved or accomplished throught a sequence of actions or
steps.
b. To provide the steps of making something.
c. To insruct the way of manuals.
4. Generic Structure of Procedure Text
Goal/Aim
This text contains about purpose of making or operating of something.
Materials/Equipment
Materials consist of ingredients that are used in making something. But not all parts
of procedure text includes materials, sometimes a procedure text does not have materials
section.
Steps/Methods
Contains the steps or sequences that must be done so that the objectives outlined in
the aim/goal to be achieved. Steps or sequences must be a sequence from the first to the last.
5. Types of Procedure Text
a. Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction / operation
manuals.
For example : how to use the CD player, the handphone, the radio, the printer, etc
b. Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity.
For Example: rules for games, road safety rules, recipes, science experiments, etc.
c. Texts that deal with human behaviour.
For example : how to success, how to live happily,etc.
6. Linguistic Element of Procedure Text
– Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first, second, third, the last)
– Use command / imperative sentence (e.g : put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion. . .,
wash the tomatoes. . . )
– Using action verb
– Using Simple Present Tense

7. Example of Procedure Text


Goal/Aim : How to Make Meatballs
Materials :

✘ 1 kilo of very fine minced meat.

✘ 2 eggs.

✘ 300 grams of tapioca-flour.

✘ 4-8 cloves of garlic.

✘ 1 red onion.

✘ 1 teaspoon of white pepper.

✘ 2 teaspoons of salt.

The steps:

✘ First of all, mix garlic, red onion, salt, and white pepper in a mortar or mixer.

✘ Second, mix the spice-mixture with the eggs, the tapioca-flour and the minced meat.
✘ After that, use your fingers, add a cup of water, and keep on working until the mixture
feels soft and smooth.

✘ Then, boil some water in a rather large pot, at least about 2 liters.

✘ Next step, start rolling the mixture into small meatballs.

✘ Finally, lower the meatballs into the boiling water. When they float up to the surface,
the meatballs are ready to serve.

8. Difference between procedure text and the other text


The main difference between the procedure text and the other text is that the
procedure text contains the 'how to' or 'steps' of doing things.

What stands out from the procedure text and is not owned by other texts include the
following:

✘ 1. Mention the steps in doing something, which contains the stages that must be taken
to achieve the goal (make or do something)

✘ 2. Always use the command pattern

✘ 3. Always use active verbs
