PROCEDURE TEXT

In doing something, especially of highly technical nature, it usually takes a hint for guidance or
procedure to be understood so it needs to be delivered in concise, clear, and sequential sentences
so that the expected goals can be achieved well. Therefore, it takes several sentences that can be
used as a guide. This kind of thing is referred to as Procedure Text.

Definition

Procedure Text is a text whose content is related to how to create, perform, or operate something in
sequence (in a regular step from start to finish). Sometimes the procedure text also mentions the
various materials or tools required.
Purpose of Procedure Text

The communicative purpose of the procedure text is to illustrate that something is done according
to the rules through clear and orderly steps. In other words, this type of text provides clues to ways
of doing things by taking the right order.
Generic Stucture of Procedure Text

Procedure text has a general layout scheme or generic structure such as the following:

a) Goal / Aim (Destination)

Goal means the goal of making or operating something.

b) Materials (Materials)
Materials are the materials needed to do something. However, there is also a Text Procedure that
does not require any materials. For example, "How to use the computer." (How to use the
computer).

There are 3 types of Procedural Text that do not use the materials section. Consider the following
explanation.

First, a Text Procedure that explains how to work or how to do manual instructions for example, how
to use video games, the computer, the tape recorder, the fax, and so forth.

Second, Procedural Text which instructs how to perform certain activities and regulations. For
example, road safety rules, video game rules, and so on.

Third, Procedural Text that relates to human nature or habit. For example, How to live happily, or
How to succeed, and so on.

c) Steps (Steps)

This section contains the steps or sequences that the agendactor should accomplish. For the record,
the Procedure Text in the form of How to usually not mention (include) material required (material
needed).
Forms of Procedural Text

Procedural Text can be used in the form of recipes / cookbooks, craft instructions, game rules,
science experiments / reports, and so on.
Characteristic features

There are several linguistic features in Procedural Text, among them are as follows:

Using imperative sentence patterns (commands), for example, cut, do not mix, and so on;
Using action verbs, such as turn, put, do not, mix, and so on;
Use connectives to sort events, such as then, while, and so on.
Use adverbials to state in detail time, place, and accurate way, for example for five minutes, 2
hours, and so on.
Using simple present tense.
Usually use numbering, firstly, secondly, next, then, and so on.
Describes the existing material, although it does not have to be always there.

The purpose of the procedure is to give instructions on how to make fried rice.

Stir until well mixed and rice is hot. (stir until well mixed and cooked rice)

Serve hot on a plate. (Serve hot dishes on a plate)
