Input power supply Transformer output Rectified output Filter output Pure DC output
Transformer:
o Transformers convert AC electricity from one voltage to another with
little loss of power.
o Step-up transformers increase voltage,
o The input coil is called the primary and the output coil is called the
secondary. These coils are linked by an alternating magnetic field
created in the soft-iron core of the transformer.
Rectifier:
o A Rectifier is an electronic device used to convert AC into DC.
o It can be a full wave rectifier as well as half wave rectifier with the help of
a transformer by a bridge rectifier otherwise center tapped secondary
winding. However, the rectifier’s o/p can be variable.
Filter:
o A filter in the regulated power supply is mainly used for leveling the
ac differences from the corrected voltage. Filters are classified into
four types namely capacitor filter, Inductor filter, LC filter & RC
filter.
Regulator:
o A voltage regulator in the regulated power supply is essential for
keeping a steady DC output voltage by supplying load regulation as
well as line regulation.
o Voltage regulator ICs are available with fixed (typically 5, 6,8,12 and
15V) or variable output voltages.

o As we have to design a 7v DC supply….!
o Regulator ratings
o We have regulator, for getting the desired output at regulator
end we need to provide certain input voltage to the regulator.
o Specifications of D1N4002
• Forward voltage drop = 1v
o For not disturbing the output if any fluctuations are occurred in input
side I am going to choose the transformer secondary value a little bit
higher than the minimum voltage needed.
o Lets find the values of capacitors
o The other two capacitor values are mention in the specific sheets of
regulator
