BASIC HAND TOOLS USED

IN A
WORKSHOP

1
Hand Tools Used in a Workshop

2
Several elements come into play when deciding
what tools are best for your workshop. You
must consider the space you have to work in, the
budget you have to work with and your own
particular taste in tools. The key to the tools that
are used in a workshop is making sure you have
the right one for the job at hand--a handful of
tools are well-equipped to handle multiple tasks.
Hand tools are operated manually without the
use of battery or power. The greatest hazards
posed by hand tools results from misuse and
improper maintenance

3
Workbench – Any good workshop begins with
the workbench. Although not considered a tool
in the same way as most others, the workbench
is the foundation upon which many of those
other tools get used. It should be rigid, smooth
and be able to hold items in a vice so that they
won’t move while you work on them.

Marking Tools – marking tools are another
traditional part of a good workshop. Some
marking tools commonly in use today are, try
square, measuring tape, scriber e.t.c.

Chisel - The most common type of chisel is the flat
chisel. You should always wear safety goggles
when working with chisels. They are usually used
in cutting of metals.

Hammer – The most common hammer in an
automotive workshop is the ball pein or engineer's
hammer. The soft-face & dead blow hammers are
also used.

Saws – Saws comes in various types depending on
the job to be done. Two types that comes to mind
are the hacksaws and wood saws.

Screw-drivers – The correct screw-driver to use
depends on the type of slot or recess in the head of
the screw or bolt, and how accessible it is. A
screwdriver is a tool, manual or powered, used
for screwing (installing) and unscrewing
(removing) screws. A typical simple screwdriver
has a handle and a shaft, ending in a tip the user
puts into the screw head before turning the handle.

9
Vices and Clamps - The bench vice is a plain vice that will hold anything
that needs sawing, filing, or chiselling. The G-clamp holds parts together
while they're being worked on. A C-clamp or G-clamp or G-cramp is a
type of clamp device typically used to hold a wood or metalwork piece,
and often used in, but are not limited to, carpentry and welding.

Spanners – There are many types of spanners. The
most common are the ring spanner, open end
spanner & the combination spanner. Spanners will
only do a job properly if it’s the right size for the
nut or the bolt to be turned

Pliers - Combination pliers are made from two
pieces of high carbon or alloy steel. They pivot
together so that any force applied to the handles is
multiplied in the strong jaws. Most pliers are
limited by their size in what they can grip. It is
important to select the right type and size of pliers
for the job

Wrenches – A wrench or spanner is a tool used to
provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying
torque to turn objects usually rotary fasteners,
such as nuts and bolts or keep them from turning.
A torque wrench tightens bolts and nuts. A pipe
wrench grips pipes and tubes. Other specialised
wrenches include the wheel brace & oil filter

Files - There are many different types of files. What makes one file different from another
is not just it's shape but how much material it's designed to remove with each stroke.

Center Punch – this is used in making a dent on a
work piece so as to prevent the working tool from
moving from the work piece.

Drill bits - Drills are one of the most versatile tools
in the workshop for making holes into a work
piece.
