LO1: PLAN AND DESIGN INTERNET INFRASTRUCTURE
 NTERNET INFRASTRUCTURE

Unit description
This unit defines the competence required to design
and implement an infrastructure for internet services
Learning Outcome
Plan and design internet infrastructure
Install and configure internet infrastructure and
services
Test security and internet access
Ensure user accounts are verified for security
Manage and support internet
1
What is Internet?
mode of communication through wired/less to receive/
transmit information.
No one owns internet.
Categories of Internet functions are:
Þ A Source of Information
Þ Books, magine, new paper
Þ A Means of Communicating
Þ Fb,e-mail,whatapp, video conferring
Þ A Means of E-Commerce
Þ For business
2
Internet Services
Internet can provides information services:
E-mail Services
Website and Web pages Services
Chat and video conferencing
News groups
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Databases for Information storage and retrieval
(including search engines)
Electronic commerce and inventory systems

3
What is Internet Infrastructure?
It’s the frameworks or architectures that systems are
made from.
Internet infrastructure consist many different
elements, in the delivery of information from one
point to another.
data centers,
networks, servers,
 storage devices, and server applications.
The internet infrastructure is an array of remote
hardware and software working to send and receive
information to various systems.

Internet Service Provider
ISP is the industry term or company that is able to
provide you Internet access, typically from a
computer.
Every home or organization with Internet access has
an ISP
Types of ISP
 DSL and Cable.
 Fiber Internet
 fiber is hundreds times FASTER than cable or DSL
Types of internet Access
Basically two types of internet access
i. Dial-up internet access
ii. Broadband internet access
i. DSL(Digital Subscriber Line)
ii. ADSL(Asymmetric DSL)
iii. SDSL(Symmetric DSL)
iv. Cable
v. Satellite
vi. wireless
Types of Internet access
i. Dial-up internet access (56Kb)
 is a service that allows connectivity to the internet
through a standard telephone line.
 service is provided through several ISP.
 Once you have found an internet service provider and
joined you must choose a password and username.
Advantages
 Uses existing phone lines(analog signal).
 Lower cost
Broadband Internet:
 it is the most used form of Internet access because
of its high access speeds
 A broadband connection allows you to play many
popular computer games that rely on a fast Internet
connection. Also always on.
 It can be offered in four d/t ways:
 DSL
 Cable
 Satellite
 Wireless
DSL Can be categorized into:
ADSL:
 Similar to that of DSL technology
 information is downloaded more rapidly than it is uploaded.
 is particularly useful for homes and businesses
 It can download web pages and files at fast speed
 allows download speeds of up to about 1.5 megabits per second,
and upload speeds of 128 kilobits per second.
SDSL
 Similar to ADSL
 downloads information at the same speed as it uploads
information.
 requires an extra telephone line.
 allows data transfer speeds of 384 Kilobits per second in both
directions.
DSL
 its connection by utilizing unused telephone wires
that cause no interruption to your telephone service.
 Speed with a DSL connection varies with your
distance from the switching station.
 large volumes of information are sent over a copper
cable at rapid speeds.
 DSL allows you to download web pages, text,
graphics, music and video in real time.
Cable
 Cable companies offers television and telephone
packages as well as broadband Internet services.
 connection is provided by the local cable TV
provider.
 speed varies with the number of users on the
service at a specific point in time.
Coaxial cables
Fiber Optics
 It is the fastest Internet connection.
 It is still in its infancy as its service areas are quite
limited and because the laying down of the fiber-
optic cable takes a while to complete.
 Wherever it is available, the cost not only competes
with that of DSL and cable, but it provides a much
faster connection than both of those services
Fiber optic cables
Satellite
 slowest broadband service is provided by satellite
and good replacement for dial-up for those people
living in remote rural areas.
 Send at speed of 500 Kbps and download at about
80Kbps speed.
 Slower than DSL and faster than Dial-up connection.
Wireless
 Provides high speed internet access without cables
or wires.
 It requires equipment like wireless transceiver, such
as a wireless card or antenna, and a wireless router.
NB:
 Broadband internet service is a form of high speed
internet access.
 speed is measured by bit rate, the number of bits
processed per unit of time, broadband internet
service is defined as being 256 kbit/s (kilobits per
second) or faster.
Cable Modem
enables cable operators to provide broadband using
the same coaxial cables that deliver pictures and
sound to your TV set.
Most cable modems are external devices that have
two connections: one to the cable wall outlet, the
other to a computer. They provide transmission
speeds of 1.5 Mbps or more.
Transmission speeds vary depending on the type of
cable modem, cable network, and traffic load.
Speeds are comparable to DSL.

 Considerations in Planning a Network Infrastructure

Different elements are needed to plan network

infrastructure:
 Physical Hardware components and
 Software components are needed
For hardware and software components determine
the following factors:
Specific location of these components
How the components are to be installed.
How the components are to be configured.
When you implement a network infrastructure, you need to
perform a number of activities that can be broadly
Grouped as follows:
 Determine the hardware and software components needed.
 Purchase, assemble and install the hardware components.
 Install and configure the operating systems, applications and
all other software.
Physical infrastructure of the network
 The physical infrastructure of the network refers to the
physical design of the network together with the hardware
components.
 The physical design of the network is also called the
network’s topology.
 When you plan the physical infrastructure of the network,
you are usually limited in your hardware component
selection by the logical infrastructure of the network.
