Changes around us
- Part 1
CHANGES AROUND US:
 A bicycle left unused in garage for a long
time rusts.
 A cake placed in the heated oven gets baked.
 Day changes into night.
 The sun and moon rise and set everyday.
These and many other changes take
place around us all the time.

“Change is the only constant in life”

ACTIVITY 1:
In each case, think and tell/write what
are the changes in the following:
1. A match stick is lit
2. Your wet clothes are hung out in the sun
3. Lumps of ice are left out on a saucer.
4. A city is rocked by an earthquake.

Let us now, learn more about these

changes and classify them in different
ways.
FAST AND SLOW CHANGES:
Fast change:
 A change that takes place in a very
short duration of time is called a fast
change. Eg. Breaking a glass.
Slow change:
 A change which requires a long time to
take place is called a slow change. Eg.
A child growing into an adult.
PERIODIC AND NON PERIODIC
CHANGES:
Periodic changes:
 Periodic changes are those that repeat
themselves at regular intervals.
 Periodic changes are also called Cyclic
changes.
 Eg. Occurrence of new moon
PERIODIC AND NON PERIODIC
CHANGES:
Non periodic changes:
 Non periodic changes are those that do not
repeat themselves at definite intervals of
time.
 These changes can happen at anytime.
 Eg. Occurence of a rainbow.
REVERSIBLE AND IRREVERSIBLE
CHANGES:
Reversible changes:
 Reversible change is the type of change in
which the original form can be brought back.
 Eg. Water, when placed in a freezer solidifies
into ice. When the ice is taken out of the
refrigerator, it melts and changes back into
water.
 Thus, freezing of water is a reversible
change.
REVERSIBLE AND IRREVERSIBLE
CHANGES:
Irreversible change:
 An irreversible change is the type of change
in which the original form cannot be brought
back.
 Eg. Chapathi dough is cooked and changed
into chapathi. The dough cannot be brought
back.
ACTIVITY 2:
Write down whether the following changes
are fast or slow / periodic or non periodic /
reversible or irreversible.
For example, Dissolving sugar in a hot
tea – Fast / Non periodic / Irreversible.
1. Learning to play an instrument well.
2. Breaking of an egg.
3. Stitching a shirt.
4. Sunrise and sunset.
5. Tearing a paper.
