Biology – Chapter 6 – Tissues (Meristematic Tissues)

Apical Meristem Experiment

Performed by Rishik Madan Jai – 9A
Procedure

 Objective: To show the importance of apical meristem in primary growth

(growth in length).
 Procedure:
 Take two glass jars and fill them with water.
 Take two onion bulbs. Leave one as it is and cut the root tips of the
other.
 Leave these two onions in jars filled with water for 5 days and observe
the growth of the roots in each case.
 To observe: Impact of presence or absence of apical meristem on growth of
the roots in the onion bulbs.
Day 1 of Experiment
Onion 1 – Cut (Day 1)
Onion 2 – Uncut (Day 1)
Onions in Water – Day 1
Onions in Water – Day 3
Onion 1 – Cut (Day 3)
Onion 2 – Uncut (Day 3)
Observations & Conclusion

 Observation:
 Without apical meristem (which is present in tips of the root
and stem), the onion whose root tips were cut stopped
growing.
 The onion that had apical meristem (where the root tips
weren’t cut), showed commendable growth in water proving
the importance of apical meristem in primary growth.
 Conclusion: Apical meristem plays an important role in the
primary growth (growth in length)
