1. INHERITED PREDISPOSITION
The means that we are only
predisposed. Through heredity,
to develop patterns of personality
which are not set or fixed, but
which are only tendencies.
For example if one’ parents
have strong personalities, one
is more predisposed to develop also
strong personalities. Whether this
is due more to heredity or
environment is not the issue.
2. ABILITIES

These too may be inherited or acquired.

One’s intelligence, inherited through genes
and honed by various experiences, make
one’s abilities distinctly one’s own.
3. FAMILY AND HOME ENVIRONMENT

This play a most vital role in

personality development. One’s early
associations are in the home. As the
individual matures, the influence of the
family group in emotional response,
beliefs, morals, social interaction,
attractiveness, outlook, religious
affiliations, etc. can not be
overemphasized.
4. CULTURE
The set-up of families is shaped by culture.
This is the mold which the family consciously
or unconsciously fits the personality of the
child. It is transmitted through language,
morals, traditions and beliefs of groups or
individuals. The culture of the place is as
different from that of the Filipinos because
of geographical boundaries, climate and
practices. The personality of the Filipino
who goes abroad would be different from
those of the Americans, but after quite a time,
the Filipino may learn to adopt the ways and
beliefs of the people there and these in a way,
alter his personality.

WAYS OF IMPROVING PERSONALITY
1. SELF-APPRAISAL – Begin by listing down and
evaluating your physical, intellectual, social
and emotional traits in terms of effectiveness,
ineffectiveness or partial effectiveness. You may
use a personal rating sheet. The list could be
elaborated upon as you go along for nobody
knows yourself more than anybody else but you.
Effective cognition consists of knowing when one
does not know and keeping an open mind. One
should correctly appraise oneself in terms of
external and internal reality, i.e. ones judgment
must not be distorted by personal motives and
that one should understand one’s true feelings
and motives.
2. EFFECTIVE REGULATION OF EMOTIONAL LIFE

One must develop a high degree

of control over one’s emotion and not allowing
one’s emotion to control you. Negative or
unpleasant emotion like fear, envy, pride, etc.
should be checked or sublimated; like positive
emotions like joy, love, reverence, etc should be
developed.
. SOCIAL RELATIONS
One should be capable of social
Intimacy-forming friendships and
participating in social relations
that are deeper than mere acquaintances.

Social competence consists of being able to

actualize one’s own needs. Relation with
others should not be exploitative, manipulative
or artificial but must be characterized by
mutuality, genuine respect and affection.
4. WORK

Love your job and try to be sufficient.

Keep busy and indulge in worthwhile
hobbies.

(In everything you do, do it for the

Glory of GOD).
5. LOVE & SEX

One must be able to forego personal

gratification, even sexual gratification,
to satisfy the loved one.

Love consists of thinking more of the

other people rather than one’s own self.

6. SELF

One must have a positive regard of one’s

self as a distinguished part of the world he lives.
One should have a well developed ego identity
and should know who he is, where he is going
and should have an inner assurance that he will
be recognized and accepted by those who count.
7. PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE
One should live by philosophy of
life that should give direction to one’s
actuations. One good philosophy is
“to do well, to do good and to be liked”
i.e living simply with no splash, or glamour,
or notoriety, striving little for social
economic gains. Another good philosophy
is “to see GOD in everything you do”.
The Bible contains many golden passages
that can enlighten or guide one’s life.
