3.3 THE HUMAN BLOOD
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
• You have transport system to carry useful substance to where they needed. The
systems also carry waste substance from where they are produced to the parts
of the body that remove them.
• The blood circulatory system is a transport system in the human body. It is
made up of the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
HEART
• The human heart is about size of a clenched fist and is located between the
lungs in the body.
• It is made up of mainly muscles and connective tissues. It pumps blood around
the body by the contraction and relaxation of its muscles.
• The heart has four chambers, two on each side, through which blood flows. The
two smaller upper chambers are called atria [singular: atrium]
• When the heart contracts, blood is fored out of the heart. When the heart
relaxes, blood flows into the heart.

BLOOD VESSELS
• Blood vessels are tubes through which blood flows. There are three main types
of blood vessels that is arteries, capillaries, and veins.
• Valves are found at different positions along the veins. They ensure that blood
flows only towards the heart by preventing the blood from flowing backwards.
BLOOD
• Blood is a mixture of platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells suspended
in a pale yellow liquid called plasma.
