Differences between
recount text and
discussion text
 Understanding Recount Text

✘ Recount text is a type of text in English that tells about a story,

action, or activity. Usually, recount text tells about someone's
experience.

Understanding Discussion text

✘ Discussion text is a text which presents a problematic discourse.

This problem will be discussed from different viewpoints.
Discussion is commonly found in philosophical, historic, and social
text. In other word, Discussion is a kind of genre used to present (at
least) two points of view about an issue.

Example of Recount text
My First Trip to Pari IslandLast September, I went to Pari Island for a holiday. I went there with Sarah, Andi, Eveline,
and Yoko.
ORIENTATION
That was my first time to travel there.Our boat departed from Muara Angke port to the island at 8.00 AM. We arrived
at Pari Island around 10.00 Am. After that, we went to our guest house that we had booked before. Fortunately, our
guest house was located near to the port, so we did not have to walk so far. The first thing that we did after that was rent
bicycle. It only cost IDR 20.000 per day. Then we did cycling for a while and had lunch before we decided to do
snorkeling.When we went snorkeling, the fisherman who became our guide brought us to the beach far enough from
our guest house. We did snorkeling there. The water was very clear. We could see groups of tiny fishes and beautiful
coral under the sea. After we did snorkeling for approximately three hours, we returned to our guest house. We ended EVENTS
up the first day by getting dinner and took some walks around.On the second day, we woke up so early to watch
sunrise. We did not need to go far to watch the sunrise because our guest house was so near to the beach and we could
watch the sunrise there. Sunrise on the beach, what a beautiful view!After we spent long enough time to watch the
sunrise, we decided to get breakfast. There was a festival at that time. We went to the festival and had breakfast there.
We ate some delicious sea foods. We felt time went so fast that day. We needed to return to our guest house because our
boat that would bring us home would depart at 10.00 AM.
In summary, my first trip to Pari Island was so enjoyable. I would like to visit this place again together with my family RE-ORIENTATION
in another chance.

Example of Discussion text
 Nuclear Energy : Advantage Or Disadvantage
Nuclear energy is commonly offered as an alternative to overcome the crisis of energy. The debate whether the use of
nuclear energy is an appropriate choice or not, has not come to an end. Some people agree with the utilization of it
because of its benefits. Some others, however, disagree because of its risks to the environment. ISSUE
Those who agree with the operation of nuclear reactors usually argue that nuclear energy is the only feasible choice to
answer the ever – increasing energy needs. In their opinion, the other sources of energy: oil, coal, and liquid natural gas
are not renewable and safe, while nuclear energy can be sustainable when produced in a safe way. PRO
However, people who disagree with the use of nuclear energy point out that the waste of nuclear products can
completely destroy the environment and human lives. A meltdown in reactor, for example, usually results in the
contamination of the surroundings soil and water. Take for example, the blow up of the nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl CONTRA
Nuclear Power Station in Russia twenty years ago. The serious contamination imperiled people and the environment
severely.
It is obvious that nuclear energy should be avoided because it really endangers the environment but what about a less
polluted energy instead of nuclear energy. Is there any alternative energy to overcome the crisis of energy? In my CONCLUTION
opinion, nuclear energy is the best choice to overcome the crisis of energy. However, government should make sure that
nuclear reactor’s construction and maintains are safe.
