Introdution :
• In this test , we will be using an artificially modified aggregate in the
shape of a parabola i.e, a hyperbolic paraboloid concrete and test its
strength. As we know, such shape have been used as structure since the
curvature of a parabola reduces its tendency to buckle in compression.
Being braced in two directions they experience no bending and are able
to withstand unequal loading, whether from dead loads or live load. Due
to this property we have replaced the normal shape of aggregate with a
hyperbolic paraboloid structure to test its strength for construction.
Aim :
• To test the strength and density of an artificial hyperbolic
paraboloid aggregate in concrete.
SCOPE :
• Modifying the shape of the aggregate in concrete such that it
reduces the density and strengthens the concrete for faster
building rates in construction and handling costs.
OBJECTIVE:
• To create a low density concrete.
• To test the strength of a structurally modified aggregate in
concrete.
• To compare the strength and density of LWC with NWC

3-D aggregate modelling:

Rhino 3-d: Rhinoceros is a commercial 3D computer graphics and

computer-aided design application software.

Through this software we

have created an artificial
shaped modified aggregate.
Steps and commands
used in this modeling:

1)Circle: Draw a closed

curve from focus points,
center and edges,
bounding rectangle, and
around a curve.
2)Rebuild: Reconstruct curves, surfaces, and extrusion objects to a
specified degree and control point number.
With the help of control points ,we can manually manipulate the shape
3)Loft: Fit a surface
through profile curves
that define the surface
shape.
This is the final 3-d structure design
WHAT IS 3-D PRINTING

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an additive manufacturing

process that creates a physical object from a digital design. The
process works by laying down thin layers of material in the form
of liquid or powdered plastic, metal or cement, and then fusing
the layers together

PLA THERMOPLASTIC

Polylactic acid, also known as

PLA, is a thermoplastic monomer
derived from renewable, organic
sources such as corn starch or sugar
cane. Using biomass resources
makes PLA production different
from most plastics, which are
produced using fossil fuels through
the distillation and polymerization
of petroleum.

Literature Review:
• Dickinson, E.J (1984) stated that the shape and the surface of aggregate particle represent the nature
of important characteristics. In order to find inter-locking aggregate particle in paved asphalt mix,
angular aggregate shape and cubical shape are prefered to be used that ones which is flaky, circular, or
elongate. Aggregate shape is also related to the degree of aggregate degradation.
• Moavenzadeh and Geotz (1963) indicated that factors influencing aggregate degradation in pave
asphalt mix are aggregate type, gradation, compaction method.
• Zhang et al., (2012).The shape, angularity, and surface texture of coarse aggregate determine the
intercalation and friction between aggregates and make a certain contribution to the formation of good
mechanical properties and structural strength of asphalt mixture. It is a key factor for asphalt
pavement to overcome permanent deformation.
• Wang et al. (2016) used a modified Los Angeles Abrasion Test (LAAT) to change the shape of the
aggregate and studied the correlation between aggregate shape parameters and high temperature
performance of asphalt mixture.
Literature Review summary
• Inter-locking is necessary to transfer the load from one side to the other side by
contact between the particle.
• The shape of the aggregate influence in the degradation of the aggregate.
• The shape, angularity, and surface texture of coarse aggregate determine the
intercalation and friction between aggregates and make a certain contribution to the
formation of good mechanical properties and structural strength.
• To change the shape of the aggregate and studied the correlation between aggregate
shape parameters and high temperature performance of asphalt mixture.
