What is GTM ?
- Foreign language teaching method.

- Originated in the late 19th and early 20th century.

- Old name: Classical Method .

- This is usually taught in the classical or dead


language
Ex: Latin and Greek.

Purposes of GTM
- Enrich their literature and language reading
proficiency as well. (Main purpose).

- Study grammar of the target language.

- Better understanding grammar of the native


language through familiarity.

- Speak and write their native language better.

- Intellectual growth through grammar exercises.

- What is being taught.

2.Techniques of GTM:
Translation of literary passage:
Students translate a reading passage from the target language into their
native language.
- The reading passage: picked from the target language literature or
written by the teacher to include grammar rules and vocabulary.
- Translation: spoken or written (or both).
- Don’t: translate idioms and phrasal verbs literally
- Do: translate idioms and phrasal verbs in a way that shows
understandings about their meaning.
Ex: The old man down the street has kicked the bucket.
He has died.

Reading comprehension questions:


Students answer questions in the target language based on
their understanding of the reading passage.
- First type of question: information questions from the text.
Ex: When did Mark Twain live?
- Second type of question: inference questions based on
understanding of the passage.
Ex: Do you think the boy was ambitious? Why or not?
- Third type of question: Related the passage to the personal
experience.
Ex: Have you ever thought of running away from home?

Antonyms/Synonyms:
Students maybe asked to:

- Find antonyms/synonyms for a given set of


words in the reading passage.

- Define difficult words from the text.

- Do other vocabulary exercises.

Cognates:
Students are taught to recognize the spellings
or sound patterns which are similar in foreign
language and mother tongue.
Ex: English word ‘possibility’ (-ty)
Spanish word ‘Possibilidad’ (-dad)

- Deductive application of rules: Applying grammar rules to given


examples.
- Fill-in-the-blanks exercise: Filling in the blanks of the given sentences
using new vocabulary items or items of a particular grammar type (ex:
prepositions, verbs).
- Memorization: Memorizing vocabulary lists, grammatical rules and
grammar paradigms (ex: conjugations…).
- Use words in sentences: Creating sentences using new vocabulary.
- Composition: Writing a short paragraph in the target language about a
topic relating to the reading passage of the lesson or preparing a précis of
the reading passage.
