Animations

This resource has been designed with animations to make it as fun and engaging as
possible. To view the content in the correct formatting, please view the PowerPoint in ‘slide
show mode’. This takes you from desktop to presentation mode. If you view the slides out
of ‘slide show mode’, you may find that some of the text and images overlap each other
and/or are difficult to read.
To enter slide show mode, go to the slide show menu tab and select either from beginning

Learning Intention
We are learning about single displacement chemical reactions.

Success Criteria
I can define a substance, a compound, a chemical reaction and a single
displacement chemical reaction.
What is a Substance?

A substance contains only one

type of material. Examples of
substances include:

• Sugar
• Oxygen gas
• Copper wire
• Baking soda
What is a Compound?

A compound is a material made of two

or more types of elements or
molecules. Some examples of
compounds include:

• Water/H₂0 (made of hydrogen/H₂

and oxygen/O)
• Salt/NaCl (made of sodium/Na and
chlorine/Cl)

Remember, all compounds are

substances. For example, sugar is a
substance and a compound.
What is a Chemical Reaction?

A chemical reaction is a process where

substances undergo a chemical change.
This change causes the substance to
transform into another substance. Some
examples of chemical reactions include:

• Fire (fuel + oxygen + heat)

• Rust (iron + oxygen)
• Rising Bread (baking soda + acid in
dough)
What is Single Displacement
Chemical Reaction?
Also known as a substitute reaction, a single displacement chemical reaction is
when a compound takes a substance from another compound. The formula
before and after the reaction is this:

AB + C A + BC

Once the reaction occurs, the formula becomes A + BC.

What is Single Displacement
Chemical Reaction?
Here’s an example of single displacement chemical reaction.

Water + Potassium              Hydrogen Gas + Potassium Hydroxide

2H₂O + 2K H₂ + KOH
When two potassium molecules reacts with two water molecules, the
potassium takes an oxygen atom one of the hydrogen atoms and becomes
potassium hydroxide. The remains of the water molecule becomes hydrogen
gas.
What is Single Displacement
Chemical Reaction?

Water + Potassium                        Hydrogen Gas + Potassium Hydroxide

2H₂O + 2K H₂ + KOH
What is Single Displacement
Chemical Reaction?

Barium Chloride + Magnesium Sulphate  Barium Sulphate + Magnesium Chloride

2H₂O + Mg H₂ + Mg(OH)₂
