Gene control of characteristics
• Everyone inherits two copies of each gene (one
from mum, one from dad).

• Different versions of genes that control the same

feature are called ALLELES

• Alleles can be dominant or recessive.

• Individuals can be heterozygous or homozygous.

C: What is responsible for Inheritance?
Curiosity Courage Compassion
Dominant and recessive
• Some alleles for a feature are able to mask the
influence of the other (weaker) allele when they
are paired
• Stronger allele is DOMINANT and is
represented by a capital letter e.g. H
• The masked allele is RECESSIVE shown as
lower case of the same letter e.g. h

Inheritance of Characteristics
o Our understanding of inheritance
began with the work of Gregor
Mendel
o Mendel was a monk and he bred
pea plants
o Mendel found that when he
crossed pink pea plants with
white pea plants all the offspringhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzon
e/clips/dominant-and-recessive-c
had pink flowers haracteristics/4197.html

Learning activity
Produce a story board explaining Mendel’s story.
Ensure you cover the following:
• How did he cross pea plants together?
• How did he ensure no other pollen could pollinate the flower he
was looking at?
• What was he looking for in his crosses?
• What do we call Mendel’s factors today?
• What are the 3 laws of inheritance that he came up with?
• Why was his work ignored?

All the offspring (First generation) are

Pink
C: What is responsible for Inheritance?

Learning activity- Punnet squares
- This 1st generation occurred because the white
flower is recessive and the pink one dominant.
- In the first generation both parent flowers are
homozygous.
- Homozygous dominant= PP
- Homozygous recessive= pp

Learning activity- Punnet squares
- This 2nd generation occurred because offspring in
the 1st generation are both heterozygous (1 pink
allele and 1 white)

Extra challenge answer
o In pea plants Pink flowers are dominant
and white flowers are recessive

For a flower to be white it must

have 2 white alleles. Since the
white colour is recessive. This
cannot occur in the 1st generation

For a flower to be pink it could

have 2 pink alleles or one white and
one pink allele. Pink is the dominant
colour.
