Does the type
of liquid affect
how fast ice
melts?
• I do believe the liquid does
matter when it comes to melting
time. I believe the water will
melt the fastest because it
contains the least amount of
HYPOTHESIS ingredients.
…….
MATERIELS YOU WILL NEED…
• - At least 4 different liquids to test. Can be any type of liquids.
• - 4 containers of equal size. Plastic or glass work best.
• - 1 Measuring cup
• - A freezer or some other way to freeze the liquids.
• - A computer or paper to record your findings.
• - First put all 4 of the
PROCEDURE. containers out on a flat
surface and all 4 of your
liquids.
• - Then pour an equal amount
of each liquid into the 4
containers using a measuring
cup with each container
getting a different liquid.
• - Then take all 4 containers
and put them in your freezer
for 1 hour.
• - Pull out the containers once
frozen and leave them
outside preferably in the sun
to watch them melt and
record your findings.
RESULTS/DATA
• To my surprise all the liquids
melted at the same rate! As
you can see from the graph
given the time and liquids all
Time it took to melt Water Gatorade Coca Cola Palmolive Dish Soap were right on point as equal.

5 minutes outside 10% Melted 10% Melted 10% Melted 10% Melted
• It is also good to note that
10 minutes outside 20% Melted 20% Melted 20% Melted 20% Melted
the temperature outside was
78 degrees Fahrenheit
20 minutes outdide 30% Melted 30% Melted 30% Melted 30% Melted during the experiment.

30 minutes outsdside 60% Melted 60% Melted 60% Melted 60% Melted

45 minutes outside 80% Melted 80% Melted 80% Melted 80% Melted

1 hour outside 100% Melted 100% Melted 100% Melted 100% Melted
CONCLUSION
• My original Hypothesis was proven wrong. I thought water
would melt the quickest, but it did not. I can see doing this
experiment again with a higher temperature outside to
possibly receive a different result. You could also use a
different types of liquids and see the results as well. I would
also like to see if certain types of the same liquid still melt
the same. Maybe use different brands of water or soda or
dish soap and see what the results are.
