How do science and technology

improve our lives

Extensive researh and investigation
have led to invention/developmemnt of
technologies. These technologies help us
live comfortably and even prolong life.
Some of these technologies are:
• Food Technology
– Food preservation process such as canning, drying,
and freezing have prolonged the shelf life of foods
by protecting them from microbed and other
agents of spoilage.
DNA Technology. Recombinant ribnucleic acid
(DNA) technology has made possible the
production of human insulin (which is used for
diabetic patients) with the help of bacterium and
yeast.
• Nuclear Medicine Technology – diagnosis of
internal parts of our body has been made
easier through computerized axial
tomography (CAT), position emission
tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI).
• Laser Technology – laser an acronym for light
amplification by stimulated emission of
radiation, is used in various field such as
communication, medicine and industry.
To demonstrate S & T in our lives, consider
the following situations:
• When preparing calamansi juice, it is
not necessary to remove the seeds
right after squeezing out the juice
from the fruit. The seeds are easier
to remove after mixing with water
ang few scoops of sugar. Why?
• For cooking with the use of fire wood,
why is wood split into slender pieces?
Why are these pieces of woods arranged
loosely in the stove?
• In setting up a water tank, why must we
put it higher than our house?
• Why is yeast to bread dough and the
dough covered with a cloth and set aside
for few hours before baking.
• When a mechanic wants to empty
the gasoline tank of a car, he fills a
plastic tube with gasoline and dips
one end of the tube into the tank. He
then puts the other end into an
empty containerwhich is placed
lower than the tank. Why?
• These commomn situations may
seem unremarkable but the fact is
they involved the application of
scientific principles. We may know
the answeres to some or all of the
questions, but we may have never
considered as science or its
application.
Now you will realize that science is indeed a
part of our lives. We should be aware of the fact
that we live in a world that operates, according to
natural laws. And what are natural laws?

• Natural law – a system of right or justice held

to be common to all humans.
• - The unwritten body of universal moral
principles that underlie the ethical and legal
norms.
Supertitious or scientific?
• Beliefs, practices and ways of thinkingof many
people, not only in the rural areas but also in
the cities, are not accord in the laws of nature.
They are unscientific and are called
superstitions.
• If a belief or practice is a supertitious, it is
definitely unscientific. However, some
superstitions have scientific explanations.
Scientific attitude and behavior
As a science student you should develop such
scientific attitude as follows:
1. Curiosity
2. Open-mindedness
3. Critical outlook
4. Truthfulness
5. Patience and perseverance
