FUNCTION
PIECEWISE FUNCTION

A piecewise function is a function that is

defined by two or more equations where each
equations applies to a certain interval over a
specified domain.

h ( 𝑥 ) =¿
4 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 >6
−7 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥< −6
Example 1:
Given the piecewise – define function
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=¿

Find and
Since , we use
𝑓 ( 0 ) =¿ 3( 0) +¿ 2 ¿ 2
Since , we use
𝑓 (− 3 ) =¿ −(−3 )
2
+¿ 3 ¿ −9+¿ 3 ¿ −6
Example 2:
Sketch the graph of the given function. What is What is

𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=¿
Example 2:
Sketch the graph of the given function. What is What is

𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=¿
Since , we use
𝑓 (− 5 ) =− (− 5 )2+ 3
𝑓 (− 5 ) =−2 5+3=− 22
Since , we use
𝑓 ( 3 ) = 3 +3 =6

A user charged ₧300 monthly for a particular mobile plan,
which includes 100 free text messages. Messages in excess
of 100 are charged ₧1 each. Represent the amount a
customer pays each month as a function of the number of
messages m sent in a month.
Let represent the amount paid by the consumer each month. It can be
expressed by the piecewise function

It’s Your Turn:
Express the following situations in piecewise function.
1. A videoke machine can be rented for ₧1000 for three days, but for the
fourth day onwards, an additional cost of ₧ 400 per day is added.
Represent the cost of renting of videoke machine as a piecewise
function of the number of days it is rented and plot its graph.
2. The cost of hiring a catering servce to serve food for a party is ₧150
per head for 20 persons or less, ₧130 per head for 21 to 50 persons,
and ₧110 per head for 51 to 100 persons. For 100 or more persons, the
cost is ₧100 per head. Represent the total cost as a piecewise function
of the number of attendees of the party.
