Understanding Business Communication

Principles and methods, communication is a process of
exchanging information between individuals through a
system that is common, either with symbols, signals,
behavior or actions.

• Business communication involves two or more people, and the
process of transferring the message can be done using the
usual ways of communicating by someone verbally, written or
non-verbal signals.
• The form of communication is divided into two:
• Interpersonal communication
• Business communication

Interpersonal Communication

 Conducted by two or more people using language that is


easy for both parties to understand and tends to be more
flexible and informal
 Communication with family, between neighbours, between
friends, between colleagues or between employees
 Intertwined more relaxed, familiar and not stiff

Cross-Cultural Communication
Communication between two or more people,
each of whom has a different culture due to the
geographical differences in where they live.
Communication can occur at the level of:

Basic forms of communication
• There are two basic forms of communication
used in the business world:
– Verbal Communication
– Nonverbal Communication

Verbal Communication

• Verbal communication is a form of communication that is


commonly used in the business world to convey business
messages to other parties, both in writing and orally
• This communication has an orderly and well-organized
structure, so that the purpose of delivering business messages
can be achieved properly.

Forms of Verbal Communication
• Various forms of verbal communication used in the business
world
1. Speaking and Writing
• In general, to send business messages, people prefer
to speak rather than write, because it is relatively
easy, practical and fast to convey messages.
Examples of written communication include writing
letters, invitations and reports.
2. Listening and Reading

• The most basic form of communication in
business communication is nonverbal
communication.
• Nonverbal communication has a less structured
nature, thus making nonverbal communication
difficult to learn

Purpose of non-verbal communication
 Nonverbal communication has six purposes, namely:
1. Provide information
2. Set the flow of a conversation
3. Expressing emotions
4. Characterize, complement, contradict or develop verbal messages
5. Controlling or influencing others
6. Facilitate specific tasks, such as giving examples of how to swing a
golf club properly and correctly.
