BUILDING WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS

GROUP 6
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS: BRIEF HISTORY
The first engineered distribution system
came in the form of “qanats” in ancient
Persia, now Armenia, around 700 BC. These
qanats, which were open tunnels dug into
hillsides, pushed groundwater from the hills
to nearby cities or towns. The use of qanats
became widespread and some still exist
today. In fact, until 1933, the entire water
supply of the Iranian capital city of Tehran
was drawn from qanats.

SOURCES OF WATER

Source water refers to bodies of

water (such as rivers, streams,
lakes, reservoirs, springs, and
ground water) that provide
water to public drinking-water
supplies and private wells.

AND PURIFICATION

Processes by which undesired

chemical compounds, organic
and inorganic materials, and
biological contaminants are
removed from water. Water
purification also meets the
needs of medical,
pharmacological, chemical, and
industrial applications for clean
and potable water.

TRANSMISSION LINE

A transmission line is a line which is transmitting

to take water from a source where needed in any
water supply projects. There is no water
distribution from this line. İf this line fails for any
reason, the area will not be supplied. Therefore,
the double or triple line should be constructed
according to needs.
STORAGE FACILITIES

Water storage facility or “facility” means all

facilities, including land, necessary for an
above-ground or in-ground reservoir. Such
facilities may be publicly owned, privately
owned, investor-owned, or cooperatively held.

WATER DISTRIBUTION

A water distribution system is a

part of water supply network
with components that carry
potable water from a centralized
treatment plant or wells to
consumers to satisfy residential,
commercial, industrial and fire
fighting requirements.
