Agenda

At the end of this session students

should be able to;
1.
Distinguish between physical and
chemical properties and give examples
2.
Distinguish between extensive and
intensive properties and give
examples
3.

Magnetic Attraction

Magnetic separation is the process of separating components of mixtures by using a magnet to attract
2 0magnetic
XX substances. Conference presentation 8
Filtration

The process in which solid particles in a liquid or gaseous fluid are removed using a filter medium that permits the
2 fluid
0 X X to pass through but retains the solid particles.
Conference presentation 9
Crystallization

Crystallization is a method for transforming a solution into a solid

20XX Conference presentation 10
Simple Fractional Distillation

the process of separating the components or substances from a liquid mixture by using selective
boiling and condensation.

DENSITY

Density is a characteristic property of a

substance.
•The density of a substance is the
relationship between the mass of the
substance and how much space it takes up
(volume).
•The mass of atoms, their size, and how
they are arranged determine the density of
a substance.
•Density equals the mass of the substance
divided by its volume;
D = m/v.
•Objects with the same volume but
different mass have different densities.

As an instructor is preparing for an experiment,
he requires 225 g phosphoric acid. The only
container readily available is a 150-mL
Erlenmeyer flask. Is it large enough to contain
