Introduction
◦ "Civilization owns to the Islamic world some of its most important tools
and achievements. The Muslim genius has added much to the culture of
all people." - Dwight D. Eisenhower

◦ - From 8th century up to modern day, Islamic civilization still impacts

the globe in field such medicines, mathematics, and architecture.
Medicines
• Ibn Sina’s investment in knowledge of drugs and diet, best known as
Avicenna by Europeans

• From Baghdad, medical institute began to show in Salerno (close to

Naples), Italy and France.

• In Baghdad, Muslims built the first hospital, and they became

universal by 10th Century.

• One of the largest hospital was built by Qala'un al-Malik al-Mansufr

about A.D. 1284 in Cairo
 Mathematics
• Al Khwarizmi – a mathematician who took information from Greeks
and Hindus to innovate further the knowledge of mathematics.

• In Europe, the number theory is known as Al Ghubar numerical or

Gobar system. Al Khwarizmi (780-
850)
• Through the analysis of Quran, Muslim scholar discovered decimals,
and fraction, which was popularized in west by 17 th century.

• Non-Muslims and Muslims traveled to Andalusia to learn more about

the scientific discoveries related to math's.

Omar Khayyam
(1048 - 1131)
◦ (23:112) Then Allah will ask them: "For how many years did you stay on earth?" (23:113) They
will say: "We stayed for a day or part of a day.100 Ask of those who keep count of this." (23:114)
He will say: "You stayed only for a while, if you only knew that.101 (23:115) Did you imagine that
We created you without any purpose,102 and that you will not be brought back to Us?“
◦ (4:176) People219 ask you to pronounce a ruling concerning inheritance from those who have left
behind no lineal heirs (kalalah).220 Say: 'Allah pronounces for you the ruling: should a man die
childless but have a sister,221 she shall have one half of what he has left behind; and should the
sister die childless, his brother shall inherit her.222 And if the heirs are two sisters, they shall have
two-thirds of what he has left behind.223 And if the heirs are sisters and brothers, then the male
shall have the share of two females. Allah makes (His commandments) clear to you lest you go
astray. Allah has full knowledge of everything.
