The Heart

IGCSE Biology
Heart Facts Treasure Hunt!
• There are 10 exciting heart facts hidden
around the room

• How quickly can you find them and stick

them IN ORDER on the board!!
The Heart – Label your diagram as we go along!
Think…
• How many chambers make up the heart?

• Which chambers pump blood out of the heart?

• Which chambers receive blood back into the

heart?

• What is the wall of the heart made of?

Now complete the diagram and the notes!

Heart Valves
• Heart has 4 valves

• Allow blood to flow only in one direction

-prevent backflow of blood

• 2 cuspid valves between each atrium and ventricle

-prevent backflow into atria when ventricles contract

• 2 semilunar valves prevent blood flowing back into

ventricle after ventricles contraction
• Heart valves in action
Think…
• How many types of valve are there?

• What do the valves do?

• How does the function of the tricuspid and bicuspid

valves differ from the SL valves?

Now complete the Heart notes by labelling the valves and

the answering the questions!
Blood vessels of the heart

• Add these notes to your diagram

• Try and fill in the table on your
sheet!

Coronary Arteries
• Cells that make up muscle
tissue of heart also need
blood

• Blood vessels that do this

are known as the coronary
arteries
Why do we need coronary arteries?
• Heart is a big muscular pump

• It requires a constant supply of food and oxygen

to keep working

• Each heartbeat is a contraction of the wall of the

heart forcing blood out

• On average your heart beats 72 times a minute

(100,000 times a day)
Think….
• Why does the tissue which makes up the heart
need its own supply of blood?

• Which blood vessels supply heart tissue with

blood?

• What could happen if the blood supply to the

heart tissue is interrupted?

• Now complete the notes!
