PE102 – FUNDAMENTALS

OF RYTHMIC ACTIVITIES
1. What are Rhythmic
activities?
● Rhythmic activities - are combinations of
physical movements with sounds, beats, or
music. Rhythmic activities rely on an internal
or external rhythm used for self-expression,
exercise, demonstration of physical ability,
socialization, and expression of culture
● Rhythmic activities are usually
expressed as synchronized dancing with
preplanned movements. Some
examples of rhythmic activities are line
dancing, classic dances like the waltz,
and other popular social group dances.
2. What are the 6
examples of rhythmic
activities?
● During rhythmic activities individuals participate
in rhythmic body movement, drumming,
auditory stimulation, playing musical
instruments, singing, and chanting, to name
a few, with a trained leader guiding the group
toward a therapeutic purpose.
3. What is a rhythmic
dance activities?
● The movement of the body in a rhythmic
way, usually to music and within a given
space, for the purpose of expressing an
idea or emotion, releasing energy, or
simply taking delight in the movement
itself.
4. What are the
classification of rhythmic
activities?
Rhythmic activities are classified into
three areas:

● (i) Fundamental rhythms

● (ii) Creative rhythms
● (iii) Dramatic rhythms
● Fundamental Rhythms:

- Fundamental rhythms include walking, running,

skipping, and other fundamental movements.

- The general purpose of a programmer of

fundamental rhythm is to provide a variety of basic
movements experiences. This will make students
move effectively, efficiently and develop a sense of
rhythms.
● Creative Rhythms:

- Creative Rhythms involve movement that initiates

animals or man. In creative rhythms, the student
expresses himself by trying to be something.

- The student in his own mind takes on the identity, for

instance, of a soldier, giant, horse, elephant, train or
object.

- He proceeds to interpret this identity with expressive

movements to be accompanied with a suitable rhythms.
● Dramatic Rhythms

- This could be based on a story and

idea, a poem and emotion or a song.
5. What is a
rhythmic pattern?
● Rhythm is the pattern of sound, silence, and
emphasis in a song. In music theory, rhythm refers
to the recurrence of notes and rests (silences) in
time. When a series of notes and rests repeats, it
forms a rhythmic pattern. In addition to indicating
when notes are played, musical rhythm also
stipulates how long they are played and with what
intensity. This creates different note durations and
different types of accents.
6. What are the 4
objectives of
rhythmic activities?
OBJECTIVE OF RHYTHMIC ACTIVITIES:

1. Develop skills necessary for recreational

enjoyment.
2. Maintain good posture and physical
efficiency.
3. Promote emotional freedom.
4. Develop a balanced and well-coordinated
body.
7. How important are
rhythmic activities to a
community?
● Rhythmic activities appeal to human emotions.
This is why these are used to gather and
entertain people of all ages and backgrounds.
The upbeat environment draws the attention
and distracts people from life’s daily
frustrations. The energy of the dancers inspires
others to join, engaging the community in a
positive activity.
● Rhythmic activities allow people to
share an intimate experience and
gives them an opportunity to form
strong bonds.
8. What are locomotor
and non locomotor
movements?
● Locomotor movement skills are those in
which the body is moving in one direction
to another , or a combination of
directions, from one point to another.
Activities such as walking, jogging,
moving forwards, backwards, side-
shuffling, skipping, running, jumping,
hopping and leaping are considered
fundamental locomotion movements.
● non locomotor movements are
movements that do not travel or
movements that do not move to another
direction, some examples of non
locomotor movements are: Bending ,
Stretching, Flexing , Extending, Lifting ,
Raising and Twisting.
