SATELLITE

COMMUNICATION

NAME : K.S.Vasavi

TYPES OF
Satellites are of two major
SATELLITE classes:
COMMUNICA- 1.Natural satellites.

TION 2.Artificial satellites.

Two types of artificial
satellites based on
Amplification :
1.PASSIVE SATELLITES.
2.ACTIVE SATELLITES.

1. PASSIVE A passive satellite is the one
that just reflects the signal
SATELLITES from one earth station to
other earth station(or
stations) without any
amplification or
retransmission.
Passive satellites are very
rare.
Few of the examples are :
Starshine 3, echo project,
Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster
etc.

ACTIVE Active satellites unlike
passive satellites amplify
SATELLITES the transmitted signals
before re-transmitting it
back to Earth, ensuring
excellent signal strength.
Nowadays all the satellites
used are mostly active
satellites.
Few of the examples are :
IRNSS-1I , GSAT-6A ,
Microsat etc.

TYPES OF ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES
BASED ON JOB THEY ARE DESIGNED FOR

 Navigation satellites.
 Communication satellites
 Weather satellites.
 Earth observation satellites.
 Astronomical satellites.
 Military satellites.
 Remote sensing satellites.
 Global positioning satellites.

TYPES OF  Broadly classified into two ;
ARTIFICIAL 1. Geostationary satellites : The artificial
satellites that rotates in the same direction as
SATELLITES the earth in their pre-fixed orbits which is
BASED ON THE DIRECTION OF
THE MOTION OF THE around 35,800 km away from the earth’s
SATELLITES AND THE DISTANCE surface are called the geosynchronous or
FROM THE EARTH’ S SURFACE geostationary satellites.
2. Polar Orbiting satellites : The artificial
satellites that orbit around the north-south
orbit passing over the north and the south
pole and is approximately 500-800km away
from the earth’s surface are called the Polar
satellites.

TYPES OF
ARTIFICIAL
SATELLITES There are three common
BASED ON ALTITUDES OF
SATELLITES ABOVE THE orbits:
EARTH’S SURFACE 1. GEO.
2. LEO.
3. MEO.

GEO

• Geostationary orbit, a circular orbit

35,785 km above earth’s equator in
which a satellite’s orbital period is equal
to earth’s rotation period of 23 hours and
56 minutes. A spacecraft in this orbit
appears to an observer on Earth to be
stationary in the sky .
• This is used for many communication
and weather satellites.

WHY DO WE NEED GEO
SATELLITES ?
• Some of the best examples of the geo satellites are
CMS-02,NILESAT 301,GOES 18,INMARSAT 6-F1.
• Used for various forms of telecommunication ,
including television. Signals from these satellites are
sent all the way round the world.
• Ground station tracking is not required as it is
continuously visible from earth all the time from
fixed location
• Less number of satellites are needed to cover the
entire earth.
