Armature Winding
The Armature winding is the main current
carrying winding in which the
electromotive force or counter-emf of
Teeth
rotation is induced.
The Armature windings of DC machines
are located on the rotor since they must
operate in union with the commutator

Terminologies related to Armature winding
Pole Pitch – It is defined as No. of Armature Slots per pole. For Example, if
there are 36 conductors and 4 poles, then the pole pitch is 36/9 = 4.
It can also be defined as the angular distance between center of two
adjacent poles. Pole pitch is always equal to 180o Electrical.
Coil Pitch – It is the distance between the two sides of a coil measured in
terms of armature slots.
If the Coil Pitch is equal to pole pitch, the winding is called Full pitched
Winding. And, if the coil pitch is less than the pole pitch, then the winding is
called short pitched winding.
Commutator Segments- They are an essential part of DC machines acting as
a rotary converter which converters DC into AC and AC into DC.

Lap Winding Wave Winding

Lap Winding
Lap winding is a type of winding that has two
layers, and is used in electric machines. Each
coil in the machine is aligned in series with a
nearby coil.
Applications –
• A lap winding carries more current than a
wave winding because it has more parallel
paths.
• Lap windings are used in large machines as
suitable voltages are easily obtained
because of the availability of large number
of armature conductors.

Back pitch (Yb)- Distance between two Front pitch (Yf)- Distance between coil
sides of a coil on back side of armature sides connected to same commutator
in terms of coil sides or armature segment in terms of coil sides or
conductors. It is always an odd No. Here, armature conductors. It is also always an
Yb =6-1=5 (Lap Winding) odd no.
Relation for finding back pitch is, For example, Here Yf = 6-3 =3 (Lap

Here, For Lap Winding, the pole pitch.
Yw = Yb – Yf = 5-3 = 2 • The average pitch Ya=(Yb+Yf)/2 is
equal to pole pitch.

C = 24,
2 3 to (3+7) = 10 10 to (10-5) = 5
p=4 3 5 to (5+7) = 12 12to (12-5) = 7
As lap winding, so Yb>Yf 4 7 to (7+7) = 14 14 to (14-5) = 9

Now, Yb=2C/p+1=7, 5 9 to (9+7) = 16 16 to (16-5) = 11

the commutator pitch Yc=+1,
7 13 to (13+7) = 20 20 to (20-5) = 15
Therefore, Yw = 2 YC = 2 8 15 to (15+7) = 22 22 to (22-5) = 17
Yf = Yw- Yb = 2-7 = -5 9 17 to (17 + 7) = 24 24 to (24-5) = 19
10 19 to (19 + 7)=26=26-24=2 26 to (26-5) = 21
11 21 to (21 + 7)=28=28-24=4 28 to (28-5) = 23
12 23 to (23 + 7)=30=30-24=6 30 to (30-5) = 25=25-24=1
