What is Electromagnetic

Waves?
 They are also called EM waves
or EM radiation
They are created as a result of
vibrations between an electric field
and magnetic field
EM Waves are all
around us!
• Electromagnetic Spectrum—name for the range of
electromagnetic waves when placed in order of
increasing frequency

Properties of EM Waves
1. They are transverse waves.

Electric and magnetic fields oscillate in a plane that

is perpendicular to the propagation of the wave.
Properties of EM Waves
2. EM waves are created by an oscillating
charged particle, which creates an
oscillating electric field and magnetic
field.
Properties of EM Waves
3. They do not require a medium
to propagate. They can travel in
vacuum at a speed of 3 x 10 m/s.

Properties of EM Waves
4. Speed of EM waves changes
depending on the medium where
they are passing through

Learning Task 1:
Match the scientists with their contributions in the development
of the electromagnetic theory. Do this in a separate sheet of paper.

A.Scientists B. Contributions
1. Andre-Marie a. Contributed in developing equations
Ampere that showed the relationship of
electricity and magnetism.
2. Michael Faraday b. Showed experimental evidence of
electromagnetic waves and their link to
light
3. Heinrich Hertz c. Demonstrated the magnetic effect
based on the direction of current.
4. James Clerk d. Formulated the principle behind
Maxwell electromagnetic induction.
5. Hans Christian e. Showed how a current carrying wire
Oersted behaves like a magnet.
Guide Questions:
1. Describe each radiation type according to its wavelength, frequency and
energy.
2. Compare the relative wavelengths of different forms of electromagnetic waves.
