Analysis:
• 1. What is the relationship between the
longest side of a triangle and the measure
of the angle opposite it?
• 2. What is the relationship between the
shortest side of a triangle and the measure
of the angle opposite it?
EXAMPLE 1. Arrange the angles in
descending order.

EXAMPLE 2. Arrange the sides in descending
order.

Triangle Inequality Theorem
•In a triangle, the sum of the
lengths of any two sides is
greater than the length of the
third side.
EXAMPLE 3. Can a triangle be constructed
with sides of lengths 12cm, 24cm, and 18cm?
Solution:
By Theorem 3, check the sum of the two shortest segments.
Is 12 + 18 > 24?

12 + 18 > 24? 30 > 24 TRUE

12 + 24 > 18? 36 > 18 TRUE
18 + 24 > 12? 42 > 12 TRUE
Therefore, a triangle can be constructed.
Can a triangle be constructed with sides of
lengths 4cm, 6cm, and 11cm?

6 + 11 > 4? 17 > 4 TRUE

4 + 11 > 6? 15 > 6 TRUE
6 + 4 > 11? 10 > 4 FALSE
Therefore, a triangle cannot be constructed.
HINGE THEOREM

It two sides of a triangle are congruent

to the two sides of another triangle, but
their included angles are not, then the
remaining sides are unequal. The longer
side is opposite the larger angle.
CONVERSE OF THE HINGE
THEOREM
If two sides of a triangle are congruent to the
other sides of another triangle, but the
remaining sides are unequal, then the
included angles of the congruent sides are
unequal. The larger angle is opposite the
longer side.

a. Interior angles - angles
inside a polygon
Name the interior angles of ΔPQR.

b. Exterior angles - the angle between a side of

a polygon and an extended adjacent side.
Name the exterior angle of ΔPQR.
c. Remote Interior Angles -
two angles that do not form a
linear pair with the exterior angle.

are the remote interior

angles.
