REPORT WRITING

What is a Report?
• A report is a brief account of an event that has
already taken place. The report helps in recording
the events of importance that occur. It attempts to
present the first hand information of an
incident/event.

Types of Report
• Generally, two types of reports are asked in
the CBSE Class 12 English paper, namely,
Newspaper Report or a Magazine Report.
• Newspaper report is the one which is
published in a newspaper and magazine
report is generally written for a school
magazine.
Newspaper Report

Format
• Headline- A descriptive title which is expressive of the
contents of the report. (It is a phrase)
• By line- Name of the person writing the report along
with the designation. It is generally given in the
question.
• Place and date of reporting- It is generally not
mentioned in a magazine report separately, but it
needs to be mentioned in case of a newspaper report.
BODY of the REPORT
• Opening Para/1st Para- It includes expansion of the
headline.  It needs to be short as it is a general overview of
the report. (What, When, Where)
• 2nd Para--Account of the event in detail- It is generally
written in two parts: First, complete account of what
happened in it’s chronological sequence (preferably) and
second, the witness remarks. (Where, How, Why, Eye
witnesses)
• Concluding paragraph/3rd Para- This will include the action
that has been taken so far or that will be taken. It is the last
paragraph. (Helpline nos, result, feedback/opinion)
Points to remember

Write place and date
Write the name of the reporter or agency like:
by name
from the correspondent
Present the details logically with authentic facts.
Use lucid, simple and meaningful language
Provide first hand experience
Give brief background if necessary
Give spontaneous, graphic description
Get relevant details and facts from the affected persons, eyewitnesses and
authorities to get the true picture.
The content should contain the following points:
When, where, why, what, who and how

Hindu’, write a brief report on the same to be published in the newspaper.

New Delhi, 8th August 20XX : ‘Swasthya Surabhi’, a super speciality hospital was inaugurated by Ram Prakash
Chaudhary, the Minister of State for Health, on Friday.
The 400-bed hospital seemed to be equipped with the most advanced and state of the art machines and
equipments with the latest infrastructure to back up exigencies. It employs internationally trained physician in the
field of emergency medicine. Fully equipped, advanced cardiac life support ambulances has been made available
round the clock. Besides having an in-house Blood Bank, its information system has been linked to other major
Blood Banks in the country to enable the right group of blood to be made available at short notice.
The hospital covered an area of 8,000 square metres and the total expenditure in building the hospital had come
around thirty five crore rupees.
Addressing the people, Dr Bhavdekar, the Medical Superintendent reinforced the need for dedicated and
committed staff. He sincerely hoped that the hospital would provide the best health services to the people at
nominal cost.
A blood donation camp was also organised to mark the auspicious occasion. The authorities also announced free
treatment for the poor patients on every Sunday from 10 to 12 noon.
 

A School Magazine Report:


 
 Give a catchy headline.
 Write the name of the reporter -byline(Mention the class or
post)
 Style may be catchy or formal.
 Cover the details of the event- event, day, date, venue, chief
guest, programme, attraction etc.
 While writing the report do keep the following points in mind:
 Readership
 The purpose
 What the report is about
 Word limit
FORMAT OF A NEWSPAPER/MAGAZINE REPORT
Headline or Title: Catchy and Brief
By Line: A Sub Headline/ Name, rank, position etc. of a person
writing the report.
(It can also come at the end)
Opening Paragraph: A brief mention of what happened, where and
how and most prominent consequence/effect
Details: Paragraph 2 and 3 give details of the event being reported.
Conclusion: A remark as to how the event has impacted life and
people.
Sample 1: You are Neha Verma, a staff reporter of ‘Navbharat Times’. Write a report for
the newspaper on the train accident in Hyderabad in about 200 words.

HAMPI EXPRESS COLLIDES WITH GOODS TRAIN: 5 KILLED

HYDERABAD, March 30, 2020: At least 5 people have been killed and several others
injured in an early morning train accident in Andhra Pradesh. Unconfirmed reports put the
number of death at 8. However, local administration and the railway authorities have
confirmed two deaths as of now. The toll is likely to rise.

The accident happened when Hampi Express collided with a stationary goods train in
Penukonda at around 3am, according to TV reports. According to initial reports coming in,
Hampi Express overshot signal and hit the goods train. It was travelling from Hubli to
Bangalore.Two bogies of Hampi Express have derailed. Several people are still trapped inside
the mangled bogies of the train. Rescue operations are underway to take out the trapped
passengers. Gas cutters are being used to cut the mangled coaches.
Anil Saxena, railway PRO, said that three coaches of
Hampi Express have been damaged--two of them are
second class general bogies, the third is the luggage-
cum-guard coach. The PRO claimed that all the
passengers from the first coach have been rescued.

The injured passengers have been rushed to nearby


hospitals. Senior railway officials have reached the
spot and are supervising the rescue operations.

QUIZ ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ORGANISED

The National-level Inter-School Quiz competition conducted by the Central Board of
Secondary Education was held at the Rama Deb Auditorium on July 25, 2013. The aim
of the quiz was to promote environmental awareness among students.
Around 80 students from CBSE affiliated schools, from across the country, participated
in the competition. Ten teams competed in the National semi final round and four teams
made it to the National finals. The four teams selected for the final rounds were DPS
Ghaziabad, Greenfields Public School, Delhi, DAV Model School, Durgapur and DPS
Ambala. The judges were Prof. RK Sharma, DU and Ms. Manju Verma, Zonal Head,
CBSE.
 
In the final rounds of the quiz, in a highly charged atmosphere and in nail
biting competition, the four selected teams battled it out for the
National Championship. Finally, DPS Ghaziabad was declared
National Champions of CBSE Quiz on Environmental Issues for 2013.
The winning team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 25,000. The second
and third prizes, which were won by DAV Model School, Durgapur
and DPS Ambala respectively, were awarded Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000.
 
The event ended with Vineet Joshi, Chairman, CBSE, giving away the
prizes. In his address, he lauded the efforts of the participants and
urged the young ones to be good citizens and to take care of the
environment.
