• To evaluate a Fiction, you should know the elements of
that literature.
• You need to analyze and study the plot, characters,
theme, point of view, and setting of the story.
• It is also important to think of questions to answer in
every element.

A. Plot- It is the flow of the story from the beginning up to the finale.
1. What are the conflicts and plot twists in this literature
2. How does the story transition to the climax?
3. What happened or what are the things that characters did to solve
the conflict/s?
4. How did the story develop?
5. Is the overall story well-written? Will it be appealing to the readers?

the specific atmosphere and details.

the message of the story?

A. Theme
It should stated in a sentence form with the theme itself as
subject and the truth about it as predicate.
The theme should not be statements that we usually heard or
familiar to many people.
This should also the generalizations in life that are related to that
particular fictional literature.

• B. Characterization
It is important to know how the details of the characters were
presented. It is either direct presentation (the author stated the
details) or indirect presentation (the author used the dialogues,
movements, or any descriptive characteristics to show who
really this character is).
The motivation of a certain character should be determined to
serve as an evidence if they are good or bad.

Throughout the story, the reader should monitor if a character
changed role/nature (dynamic) or stayed the same until the end
(static).
We must not forget also who are the main character/s
(protagonist/s), supporting characters, and the villains
(antagonists).

C. Point of View
• Evaluating fiction also means that you need to know if the one
narrating is the author (first person POV) or the character (third
person POV).
• In the third person point of view fiction, it is important to
distinguish if it is a:

1. third person omniscient (explains what the character is doing
or experiencing).
2. third person limited omniscient (partially explains what the

Understand how the events are connected to the next one and
to the general story.
Identify if there are suspense scenes. It can be mysteries or
dilemmas.
Tell how the story ended. Every novel or short story has an
ending that are either surprised, happy, tragic/sad, and
indeterminate.

2. Indeterminate- A kind of ending that is not clear or
