(Elements and Compounds)

OBJECTIVE/S:
Recognize that
substances are classified
into elements and
compounds.
Rows are called “Periods”
Columns are called “Groups”
Region: Metalloids
Metalloids
• B- Boron
• Si- Silicon
• Ge- Germanium
• As- Arsenic
• Sb- Antimony
• Te- Tellurium
• Po- Polonium

SCIENCE 7
Week 4
OBJECTIVE/S:
Differentiate elements, compounds
and mixtures.
Investigate properties of acidic and
basic mixtures using natural indicators.
COMPOUNDS
• Sodium is an element.
• Chlorine is an element.
• When sodium and chlorine bond they
make the compound Sodium chloride,
commonly known as table salt.
COMPOUNDS
• Hydrogen is an element.
• Oxygen is an element.
• When hydrogen and oxygen bond
they make the compound water.
MIXTURES
• When table salt and water are
combined, a mixture is created.
Compounds in mixtures retain their
individual properties.
pH scale
•pH is a numeric scale •p- power/
in chemistry that is
used to determine potential
whether the substance •H- Hydrogen
is acidic, basic or • Scales- an instrument
neutral in nature. for weighing
ACIDS
•Substances that have a pH level of less than
7 are acidic in nature.
For e.g Acidic substances such as vinegar,
tamarind, lemon, etc.
•The level of extremely strong acids can be
less than 0 pH scale
BASES
•Substances that have a level of more
than 7 are basic in nature. For e.g. Basic
substances such as baking soda,
limewater, ammonia, etc.
• The level of extremely strong bases can be more
than 14.
pH scale
SALTS/ NEUTRAL
•Whereas substances which have
a pH value of equal 7 are neither
basic nor acidic which means
they’re neutral in nature. For e.g.
Pure water. pH scale
