Introduction to UV
Radiation Water
Treatment

Presented By : Iftikhar Hussain

Introduction to UV Radiation Water Treatment
• Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of
electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength
shorter than that of visible light. UV radiation has
been used for water treatment since the early 20th
century.
• UV radiation has proven to be an effective method
for killing harmful microorganisms in water and
can be used to prevent waterborne diseases. This
method is most commonly used in combination
with other treatments such as filtration and
chlorination.
How UV Radiation
Treatment Works?

Presented By : Zain Ul Hassan

How UV Radiation Treatment Works
• Use special lamps that emits emit UV light of particular wavelength.
• 254 Nano meter wavelength UV Light.
• Different Organisms get destroyed in different time interval.
How UV Radiation Treatment Works

• UV radiation works by damaging the

DNA of microorganisms, preventing them
from reproducing. This method does not
use any chemicals, making it a safe and
cost-effective way to treat water.
• If a micro organism can no longer
reproduce, it can not replicate, therefore it
can not infect other organisms with witch
it has contact.
Advantages of
UV Radiation
Treatment
Presented By : Afzaal Haider
Advantages of UV Radiation Treatment
• UV radiation is a safe and cost-effective way to
treat water.
• This method does not use any chemicals and does
not produce any by-products, making it an
environmentally friendly option.
• UV radiation is also a fast and efficient way to treat
water. The radiation is able to kill most
microorganisms in a matter of minutes, making it
an ideal choice for emergency situations.
• Destroys 99.99% of microorganisms.
• FDA approved method.
UV Addresses

• Viruses • Typhoid Fever

• Bacteria • Flu
• Cysts • Polio
• Coliform • Dysentery
• Salmonella • Cholera
• Giardia • Meningitis
• E. Coli • Infectious Hepatitis
• Cryptosporidium
Disadvantages of
UV Radiation
Treatment
Presented By : M. Muzammil
Disadvantages of UV Radiation Treatment
• Ineffectiveness against some contaminants: UV water
purification is not effective against certain contaminants,
such as chemicals and dissolved solids, which may require
additional filtration methods.
• UV light sensitivity: UV light is sensitive to factors such as
water temperature, pH level, and turbidity, which can
impact its effectiveness. If these conditions are not optimal,
the UV light may not be able to effectively purify the water.
• Limited ability to treat large volumes of water: UV water
purifiers are generally designed to treat small to medium
volumes of water, making them less practical for large-scale
water treatment.
• Power requirement: UV water purifiers require a power
source.
Conclusion

• In conclusion, UV radiation is a highly

effective, safe, and environmentally friendly
method for water treatment that is gaining
popularity as more and more people look
for ways to purify their drinking water. By
understanding the advantages and
disadvantages of this method, you can
determine if it is the right choice for your
water treatment needs.
