Journey of BYJU’s
The world’s most valued EdTech company BYJU’s valued at $5.4 billion, was founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran, a
person from a small village Azhikode in Kerala.
He started his teaching journey accidentally in 2003 when he tutored his friends for CAT and along with them he also gave
the exam and cleared with 100 percentile.
Soon the mouth publicity made him popular and he started taking coaching for roundabout 1000 students in year 2007 in
an auditorium.
By the year 2009 he became the center of the limelight and started taking coaching classes in 9 cities and he used to travel
to these cities every week for delivering lectures.
The factor that differentiated the BYJU’s teaching from other competitors is there ability to predict what the doubts
students can have and providing them with well prepared solutions.
To take his unique way of teaching at next level he started his company in 2011 by starting online interactive and
interesting session for classes 4 to 12
Since then the company has never looked back. Now it has collaborated with Disney and has launched Disney BYJU’s
early learn app.

Financing the startup:


• In the beginning, Byju himself invested Rs. 2 laks

• In 2013 Mohandas Pai and Ranjan Pai invested Rs. 50 croreafter observing popularity of app in students of
Manipal Institute of Technology

• 2016 brought venture capital firms like Sequoia capital and the Belgian firm Sofina which invested Rs. 500
crore

• September 2016 also attracted the attention worth 332 croe Rs. from the Chan Zuckerberg initiative

Byju Raveendran had a first hand knowledge of how the education sector works and what needs to change. The
startup also could create a more attractive way of presenting their services

The startup also has a very strong content and media team keeping them updated about developments in education
and technology. This team succeeded in personalizing user experience

BYJU’s succeeded in attracting investors who are willing to invest large amounts in education startups

The startup begun by making content for school going students but soon diversified for test preps like NEET, JEE
and UPSC
