SLEEPING HABITS IN RELATION TO THE LEVELS

OF CONSCIOUSNESS OF
LICEO-DE LA SALLE STUDENTS
Background of the study
Sleep is an integral part of one’s daily routine. Statistical data show that about 1/3 of one’s time is allocated for

it. Additionally, sleep is a complex and dynamic process that affects how your body functions (Brain Basics:

Understanding Sleep, n.d.). However, over the past few decades, both sleep quality and quantity have been in a

constant decline, with most people getting poor sleep on a regular basis (Mawer, 2019). The following are some of

the reasons found by research as to why this had been the new normal for some: mental health disorders, medical

conditions, and sleep-related disorders. Not only does lack of sleep affect one’s physical aspect of the self, but it also

negatively affects the brain’s ability to receive and process information. Studies have shown that the minor things

one does in their sleeping habits, have a long-term effect on their sleeping time.
Background of the study
Sigmund Freud believes that the human consciousness is subdivided into three: conscious, preconscious, and

unconscious. In order to understand how the body functions, specifically how it processes and stores information,

researchers have tapped into the human consciousness to understand this process. That being said, sleep offers a

unique opportunity to relate changes in brain activity to changes in consciousness (Nir et al, 2013).

The present study will assess the habits and behaviors of Liceo-De La Salle students and their relation to sleep

quality by introducing a researcher-made questionnaire to evaluate factors that will play a role in determining their

level of consciousness.

Additionally, this study evaluated the habits specified by the respondents and how they affected their levels of

consciousness.
Statement of the problem
The main objective of this study is to determine the relationship between sleeping habits

and the level of consciousness of the Grade 12 STEM students of Liceo-De La Salle. This

study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What are the sleeping habits of the Grade 12 students of Liceo-De La Salle?

2. What is the level of consciousness of the respondents?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the sleeping habit and the level of

consciousness of the respondents?

hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between the sleeping habits

and level of consciousness of the respondents.

Research design
• The correlational research design will be utilized.

• The researchers will be using the correlational research design

because it is known as a suitable method used in this study since
its main purpose is to see if there is a relationship that exists
between the correlated variables, which in this study are the
sleeping habits and the levels of consciousness of the
respondents.
Subject of the study

The researchers chose the Grade 12 STEM students of Liceo-

De La Salle for A.Y. 2020-2021 as the respondents of this study.

Results and discussion
Variable Mean Sd Interpretation
As a whole 3.52 .509 Above Average

Table 1 shows the sleeping habits of the respondents when taken as a whole. Results
show that the respondents have an above average (M= 3.52, SD= 0.509) sleeping habits.
Results and discussion
Variable Mean Sd Interpretation
Conscious Level 3.53 .447 Above Average
Preconscious Level 3.69 .472 Above Average
Unconscious Level 3.86 .518 Above Average

Table 2 shows the level of consciousness of the respondents. Results show that the
respondents have an above average (M= 3.53; SD=0.447) conscious level. In the case
of the preconscious level, the table shows that it also has an above average (M=3.69;
SD=0.472) interpretation. Lastly, as per the data, an above average (M=3.86;
SD=0.518) interpretation can also be drawn.
Results and discussion
Variable Sleeping Habits Conscious Level Preconscious Level Unconscious Level

Sleeping Habits -
Conscious Level .313** -
Preconscious Level .263** .387** -
Unconscious Level .254** .336** .258** -

Table 3 shows the significant relationship between the sleeping habits and levels of consciousness of the respondents. Using
the Pearson (r) moment of Correlation, the following results were obtained. With r(262) = .313, p = .000, since p<.01, there is a
significant relationship between sleeping habits and the conscious level of the respondents. With r(262) = 263, p = .000, p<.01,
there is a significant relationship between sleeping habits and preconscious level of the respondents. With r(262) = .254, p = .000,
p<.01, there is a significant relationship between sleeping habits and unconscious level of the respondents. Furthermore, there is a
significant relationship between conscious level and preconscious level with r(262) = .387, p = .00, p<.01. Moreover, there exists a
significant relationship between conscious level and unconscious level with r(262)= .336, p=.000, p<.01. Finally, with r(262)
= .258, p = .000, p<.01, there exists a significant relationship between preconscious level and unconscious level.
CONCLUSION

Previous research has led to the understanding that sleep deprivation has a negative impact on

cognitive processes. On a similar notion but on the opposite side of the argument, the findings of

the study led to the understanding that good sleeping habits lead to high levels of function for the

three levels of consciousness: conscious, preconscious, and unconscious.

The data acquired from the respondents, which were the Grade 12 STEM students,

revealed that they had good sleeping habits, which led to an above average interpretation in terms

of the sleep quality and quantity.

CONCLUSION

This proves that habitual tasks done before sleeping greatly affect one’s sleep. Additionally, the

respondents’ good sleeping habits showed a relevant relationship with the levels of consciousness.

The conscious level had a significant relationship with sleeping habits. The preconscious level

also had a significant relationship with sleeping habits. Similarly, the third level, which is

unconscious, showed that it had a significant relationship with sleeping habits.

Furthermore, the retrieved data from the survey also proved that the three levels of

consciousness had a significant relationship with one another.

CONCLUSION

With the Pearson (r) Moment of Correlation used as the statistical analysis tool, the conscious

level showed that there exists a significant relationship between it and the preconscious level and

the unconscious level. The preconscious level also proved that a significant relationship also exists

between it and the conscious level and the unconscious level. Lastly, the unconscious level

similarly proved an existing significant relationship between it and the conscious and preconscious

levels. In the context of this, the significant relationship as interpreted by the Pearson Moment of

Correlation means that when one variable is high, the others show similar statistics.
RECOMMENDATION

Based on the findings, the following recommendations have been made by the researchers for the further

development and improvement of the study regarding the sleeping habits in relation to the levels of consciousness

of Grade 12 STEM students. Its in relation to the levels of consciousness of Grade 12 STEM students.

The researchers recommend that since the students used their levels of consciousness in doing their daily

tasks, practicing good sleeping habits can help them in maintaining their mental, emotional, and physical health in

its optimal state.

RECOMMENDATION
If given more time to invest in this study, as well as the researchers, it is recommended that the researchers

manage their time since the study had created complications and difficulties. As thus, the gathering of data should

be given ample amount of time to not cause any delays.

In the future, further study on the sleeping habits in relation to the levels of consciousness should be made

using other factors aside from the ones identified in this paper. The researchers suggest that the next group of

researchers should improve the study’s research instrument to maximize its reliability, and that they should not only

focus on Grade 12 STEM students, but the entire Senior High School community as well.
