CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
The association between students' sleep patterns and academic performance is

becoming increasingly important in educational and health studies. Sleep pattern is an

essential component of human physiology, influencing cognitive performance, memory

consolidation, and overall well-being. Maintaining appropriate sleep patterns is critical

for students with busy academic schedules and competing objectives to fulfill their

academic goals. Numerous studies have looked into the complex interplay between sleep

habits and academic performance, attempting to understand how differences in sleep

duration, quality, and timing affect students' cognitive abilities, attention span, learning

efficiency, and, ultimately, grades and academic success. The findings of these studies

have important implications for educators, legislators, and healthcare practitioners, as

they highlight the need of supporting healthy sleep habits among students in order to

support their academic aspirations and overall well-being.

Getting good night's sleep enhances cognitive capacities such as memory, focus,

and decision-making. It permits the brain to carry out necessary functions during the best

phases of sleep, such as memory consolidation. Getting enough sleep early in the evening

is beneficial for mental health and mood regulation. It can raise emotional resilience

generally and lower the chance of mood disorders like anxiety and sadness. Going to bed

carly guarantees that you wake up feeling renewed and energized, which can result in

increased productivity and efficiency throughout the day. This adds to the enhanced
productivity. You're more likely to approach things with greater concentration and mental

clarity

Statement of the Problem

The aim of this study is to look into the relationship between students' sleep habits
and academic achievement. The project specifically seeks to answer the following
research questions:

1. What are the average sleep habits of students in terms of consistency, quality, and
length?
2. In what ways do the length and quality of sleep affect academic accomplishment as
determined by grades, test scores, and overall test scores?
3. Are there any lifestyle or demographic variables that affect how sleep patterns and
academic achievement related?
4. Can pupils' academic performance improve as a result of sleep-related interventions?
5. What does regular sleep schedule contribute on academic achievement?
Theoretical Framework
Iris typical to look at variables including academic accomplishment, length, and
quality of sleep in order to investigate the relationship between students' sleep patterns
and their academic performance. A theoretical framework that explains how sleep
impacts cognitive processes like attention and memory consolidation, which in turn
impact academic achievement, could draw from a number of psychological theories, such
as the theories of arousal and cognition of sleep. Additionally, frameworks like the
biopsychosocial model can be used to examine how biological, psychological, and social
factors interact to determine sleep patterns and academic outcomes.

Examining the complex relationship between students' sleep habits and their
academic performance requires a thorough examination of a number of variables, such as
academic achievement, the length of sleep, and the quality of sleep. A comprehensive
theoretical framework that explains how sleep affects cognitive functions including
attention and memory consolidation and how that affects academic performance is based
on a wide range of psychological ideas. These include theories of cognition of sleep,
which explore how sleep promotes learning and information processing, and theories of
arousal, which explain the degree of brain activation during sleep. Furthermore, by
analyzing the ways in which biological, psychological, and social elements interact to
influence people's sleep habits and academic results, frameworks such as the
biopsychosocial model provide a comprehensive approach. Through the integration of
different theories and frameworks, scholars may decipher the complex mechanisms that
underlie the correlation between sleep and academic performance. This will facilitate the
development of focused treatments and methods that aim to enhance students' academic
performance and overall well-being
Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of this study involves investigating the relationship between sleep
between many aspects of sleep including duration, consistency, quality, timing and
academic outcomes, such as test scores, grades, and general academic success. It will be
conducted at St.Matthews High School, Inc. in Aloran, Misamis Occidental, during the
current Academic School Year 2023-2024.The respondents will be 35 selected students
from the 9th grade of the aforementioned school. In order to gather a wide range of
experiences and elements that may influence the association between sleep habits and
academic performance, the study may include students from different gender groups and
educational background.
Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

1.Students: Are among the beneficiaries of this study as it highlights the significance of
sleeping patterns in relation to academic/performance. By acknowledging the importance
of establishing healthy sleeping habits, students can develop regular sleep schedules and
prioritize sufficient rest. This, in pin, can contribute to improved academic performance
and overall well-being of a student.

2.Teachers: Benefit from this study as they prioritize the well-being and healthy sleep
habits of their students. Recognizing the significance of sleeping patterns in academic
performance, the teachers can implement strategies to teach students about the
importance of proper sleep schedules and encourage them to sleep early. By promoting
these practices, teachers can contribute to improved academic performance among
students.

3. Parents: Benefit from this study as they have a crucial role in shaping their child's sleep
schedule. By understanding the relationship between sleeping habits and academic
performance, parents can encourage their child to establish regular sleep patterns and
prioritize going to bed early. By promoting healthy sleep habits, parents can positively
impact their child's academic performance and overall well-being.

4. School. This study is beneficial for Saint Matthew's High School of Aloran Inc. by
providing a safe environment with diverse students, support from teachers, adherence to
ethical standards, and the opportunity for long-term study. These factors are crucial for
examining the impact of sleep patterns on students' academic performance. Conducting
the study at the school enables researchers to collect vital data on how sleep habits affect
students'
school success, leading to interventions that enhance students' well-being and
achievements.
5. Future Researchers. Future researchers benefit because studying how sleep patterns
affect students' academic performance helps them understand if there is a direct link
between sleep and school performance. They can also learn how sleep influences learning
and develop ways to improve sleep habits. This study is important for shaping school
rules, promoting teamwork among experts, and increasing what we know about sleep and
school success.

Conceptual Framework
Examining how pupils sleep and academic achievement are related requires a
number of important steps. Frits and foremost, you should develop a theoretical
framework that outline pertinent variable like sleep length, quality , and consistency in
addition to academic outcome like attendance, grades, and cognitive performance. After
that, you could plan studies or questionnaires to gather information on sleep patterns and
measures of academic achievement Lastly , you would examine the information to find
pattens, causes and any mediating factors that could shed light on the relationship
between sleep habits and academic performance

Here are 3 steps that you can use to make a conceptual framework :
1. Select a topic
2. Details relationship
3. Design the framework
