COMPLEX NUMBERS

• Complex numbers are numbers of the form

a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i
DEFINITION is the imaginary number with the value i2= -
1

a + bi

PROPERTIES OF ALGEBRA FOR COMPLEX NUMBERS

1) Addition and Subtraction of Complex Numbers

(a + bi) + (c + di) = (a + c) + (b + d)i

AND
(a + bi) - (c + di) = (a + c) - (b + d)i

EXAMPLE 2: Solve the following:

a) (3 + 5i) + (-2 + 3i)

b) (6 + 4i) – (3 + 6i)

2) Multiplication of complex numbers

(a + bi).(c + di) = (ac – bd) + (ad + bc)i

EXAMPLE 3: Solve (5 +3i).(2+7i)

MAGNITUDE

|z| is the magnitude of z = a + bi where |z| is defined as:

|z| = |a + bi| = √a2 + b2

EXAMPLE 4: Find the magnitude of:

a) |2 + 5i|

b) |3i|

c) z = 1 + i

CONJUGATE

If z=a + bi is a complex number, then its conjugate denoted by z, is defined as:

z = a + bi = a - bi

EXAMPLE 5: Find:

a) 3 + 5i

b) -7 – 7i

Quotient of Two Complex Numbers

Quotient of complex numbers can be solved by rationalization.

Simply multiply the numerator and the denominator by the
denominator’s conjugate.
